Why does the HTC always go into sleep mode when running an application

I am not sure if sleep mode if the proper term. But the phone's screen timer times out even when running an application. Does anyone know if that is customizable? I have been looking around the phone but do not see the option other than the screen time out. If it is customizable, where would I find that? Thanks for your help!

The screen time out setting is what you are looking for.

Some apps can override it to allow for uninterrupted playback, movies for example. Most apps aren't, though, so the screen is allowed to turn off to save battery when not in use, as well as saving the screen from possible burn in or other heat related issues.

I downloaded an app called notification widgets. It puts my toggle switches in my notification bar - something I hope they change with any future updates. Still playing with this app.
BUT if you dl HDwidgets, there is a toggle for screen timeout. You can set the time for when your screen goes to sleep. Or, use the toggle that allows you too set how long before your screen goes to sleep. And I believe there is one where you can turn it off/on.
