Nougat is pretty out of date -- 2 full versions behind what an S8 should be on, and 3 full versions behind the most current (Android 10). I agree with mustang7757, definitely use Smart Switch to see if you can update that way. Your issues might be solved by having a more current Android version.
If Smart Switch doesn't give you the option to update, then did the phone originate from a different carrier than the one you're using now? Carrier-specific phones typically need to be on that original network to get the official system update over-the-air. Or did someone flash a different firmware on the phone to make it compatible with your region?
It doesn't explain like you said, but looks like your phone having a issue as it's 2 Android version behind..it should be on Android 9im on a different carrier but even if i need to update that wouldnt explain why there would be any reason a feature would one day stop working properly and just annoy someone with taking away a quality of life feature

I hope also ..but you need to be up to dateim trying to update it with smart switch now, i really hope this fixes it tho i doubt it

So you'll need to download Odin version 3.13.1 and the firmware from sammobile website . If your interested in doing this I would watch some you tube video to get familiar with it
