Why dont my contact widgets show names underneath?

I have a Android Moto z force phone. I have several direct dial widgets on one of the home screens. When I first put them on it displayed the name of the contact under the widget icon. Then one evening it just showed the word "contacts" under each widget. They still work fine but it would be nice to see the names under them. If I add a new contact widget all the names come back until the next day. It seems to coincide with auto update. Anyone out there familiar with this and know if it can be fixed or is just a bug? Thanks
