Why don't people like HTC anymore?

Kind of like Samsung...release one flagship phone a year.

Sure the Galaxy S III is getting a lot of press this year, but Samsung still releases low- and mid-range phones. Tons of variants.

It's plausible that HTC present all three One-series phones to all four national US carriers. Looks like Verizon and Sprint rejected them and asked for their own models. If you were HTC, would you say to Verizon and Sprint, "Screw you. We're taking our One-series elsewhere!" or would you listen to what they wanted and build it for them?

HTC isn't in the position that Apple and Samsung are in.

Familiarity, I guess. HTC can assume people on the Vivid are used to previous versions of Sense. With Sense 4 phones, they can start completely fresh.

I have to agree with that. If a carrier lost Samsung it would be a huge loss. And they all practically begged apple to get the phone on their networks. If they lost HTC it would be no big loss atm.

Honestly I wonder how much longer they'll be around. The one series was a step in the right direction but they still are reporting massive losses quarter to quarter

After the DROID Incredible and EVO 4G, I hardly saw any HTC devices out in the wild.

I know way more people now with iPhones and Galaxy S IIIs than HTC phones.

Heck, I see more Motorolas in the wild than HTCs.

I still like HTC. The problem is Verizon doesn't. All they have is the dinc 4G and the rezound. The dinc is too small for me and I had a rezound for 3 months. The battery life was terrible and the extended battery made the phone too thick and awkward. If there were better options on Verizon then I would go with HTC. As it is I am stuck with Samsung, Because I don't like Motorola phones and lg phones are a joke.

Samsung sold millions of SGSII's also, but I don't see them putting Jelly Bean on it. Once your S3 gets Jelly Bean it's done. Have you not already seen that trend from them? Now they're focusing on the Note 2, then it'll be the S4. I'm not saying the One X will get anything past Jelly Bean officially, but I'm also not blaming that on sales numbers.

I've seen the sizes of Nandroid backups and RAM usage by both operating systems. Guess what? Touchwiz takes up more RAM and the Nandroids are bigger (data wasn't the difference, as they were essentially identical). Touchwiz just isn't lighter than Sense. Stop fooling yourself. Nobody gave you grief about your phone choice, either, and this thread isn't about the One X vs. S3 anyway.

The same reasons that you might love your S3 could be reasons why someone else hates it.

There have been some info and leaks that suggest Samsung is working on JB for the Galaxy S2. I wouldn't be surprised if the S2 gets JB.

HTC is pretty terrible with updates, though. They used to be one of the premier OEMs because they had fast updates while Samsung was absolutely terrible, but the tides have absolutely turned since late 2010.

That's for sure? but they could be. To me (a reasonably tech savvy guy), they are invisible. I suppose they are content courting the carriers and letting them promote their devices. Apple and Sammy are letting the carriers court them because they have reached the customer and convinced them that these are the devices to have.

There is room for a third major player here if Samsung and Apple keep churning out the same kinds of devices?

Apple - Gorgeous build quality, but in a walled off garden. It does what it does, but it does it extremely well. You can't out-iPhone the iPhone; Apple is very good at what they do. But you can make a phone do more things that people would want/use if they knew they could.

Samsung - Expandable, access to anything you want, but in a cheap plastic case from a company with questionable quality and customer service. Now you can't out-tech Sammy; their resources are just too vast. But you can build a much higher quality device with a better user experience.

HTC - Has proven they can deliver the best of both worlds but I think they have lost their way.

Commit to the software and keep it up to date for at least a two year cycle, offer user replaceable storage and power, and design a beautiful, quality handset, and people will take notice. As an Apple guy for over two decades, I am really impressed with Android JB and the Nexus 7, but I am frustrated by the choice of hardware available with the latest and greatest OS. Shrink the N7 down, add a radio, add the necessary tools for SMB/AFP/VNC sharing with LAN/WAN access out of the box, put it in a "Seiko Watch" quality case and you'll have folks lining up for it like they do for iPhone. But you got to get the word out? "do you want to have limited capability or a cheap plastic phone? Now, you no longer have to choose!"

That won't work, because AT&T seems to have an endless sale on cases @ 50% off and almost everyone I see buying phones there walks out with an Otterbox or something similar - me included.

No one cares if it's Plastic, Metal, Glass or Wood when it's in a case 100% of the time.

That's why Samsung can get away with their plastic phones, and that's why the build quality disparity between the One X and the GS3 is pretty much non-factor to the average consumer.

That protruding camera hump on the One X is actually more disturbing to me than Samsung's use of plastics for their phones.

Actually, from what I have seen, most people don't use a case at all and don't seem to care if their phone gets weathered after a couple years of use.

I talk bad about HTC. I won't lie. But im also going to admit I wish my Galaxy Nexus looked more like the ONE X (except the front, no phone has a prettier face than the Galaxy Nexus).

I don't consider cheap plastic on a $700 phone to be quality.

...but I agree. I want my device to feel more premium if it costs more money.

Nothing wrong with plastic.

This phone has great build quality as many times as its been dropped.

HTC has had more build quality issues than the gs3
