Why glass?

Best of luck with that if you want something high end!

The best you'll get is a very slim, grippy rubber case...

I know. I guess I just hope that someone, somewhere realizes that most people could care less what the back of a cellphone looks like. I mean, really, who says 'hey...wanna see the back of my cellphone?. Wait, let me take my case off'. ;)

Well since the front will always look like any rectangular piece of glass, and there are no more front bezels with matching color, then the back's design is all they have to play around with.
And it's always the same stupid glass being used.

You should see the pretty blue on back of my note 10+
Broke.
It was in a light case.
I know we want a phone with a all day battery.
And that battery adds weight.
Just like a armor case.
But if you a removable battery.
You could carry 2 smaller batteries, and or a larger battery.

I like wireless charging as much as everybody else.

Can't believe, there is not a better material other than glass to go on back.

Of course there is, hard plastic or rubber for example.

Both will allow for wireless charging, and will be far more durable and lighter than glass.

It's just that manufacturers want to "wow" people with shiny glass backs.

Ceramic is much more durable than the glass backs but it's heavier and more expensive.

Unfortunately, the shiny backs are what catches the eye. I did like the ceramic S10+ More durable than glass, while still providing the wireless charging option. They could make a nice acrylic backed phone if they wanted to.

I don't like wireless charging Wireless charging is more suitable for the developed countries. Erratic electricity supply, the relative inefficiency of wireless charging and the lack of reliable repair stores if the battery gets damaged make me prefer wired charging.

When I was younger.
The boss had aluminum glass doors and a couple windows put in a new building he built.
When the contractor handed him the keys.
He picked up a brick, walked up to the front door and drew back and threw it at the door.
I tripped out.
The brick bounced off..
Left some scratches on the glass.
The boss turned around with a smile on his face.
He said I couldn't wait till this moment came forward.
It passed .
If it had of broke. No need to know what I was gonna say.
The thing I wanted most in this building is exactly what just happened.

Well, that kind of glass is typically really a laminated polycarbonate. Which is... plastic.

That was over 35 yrs ago...

Don't tell me they haven't come up with something better since thin.
As an architect, working in the hurricane prone South Louisiana, and working at a firm that does a lot of justice work (courthouses, detention centers), not really.

Glass is glass, and it breaks. Laminated with varying layers of polycarbonate is what provides resistance to bullets, flying debris, and tossed bricks. By itself, glass is useless. Tempering will toughen it some, but only up to point - one sharp wack, and it desintegrates into a billion little pieces.

We're all different and those different likes/dislikes need to be respected.
But the back of my phone is the last thing I look at when buying one.
Do people seriously buy a cell phone because of the visual of the back of it (usually covered up with a case) is shiny and pretty?
It's like buying a nice framed picture to hang on the wall because the canvas cover on the back, that part you never see, is very cool.
I'm yet to have someone say 'hey, check out the back of my new phone!'.
Again, that's just me but I can't see how having a sexier phone back is such a selling feature for ANY phone.

With the phones out.
The processors..faster memory.. not to mention more memory.
Better screens.
Bigger hard drives..
Newer versions of Google.

Unless you are in a bind with money.
Who wants to go backwards.

Well yes, but with all modern phones being bezel less slabs of glass, they all look the same from the front so that only leaves room for design variations on the backs of them.

Assuming that there is something like glass but better, like transparent aluminum, it would be so expensive that people would wish phones cost $1,000.

Do the phone Mfg have glass backs so we can get a better signal.
If the back of the phone was aluminum.
Would the antenna really work as well.
Seems like some phone mfg was having signal problems if I remember correctly.

Rubber/plastic backs are just as good with signal, except they're lighter and don't break...

You missed the point. The S8Active is still a more than adequate device with a composite integral frame /case.
I've dropped mine plenty, and the plastic never gets damaged. Still has alot of features that aren't available even on the S10.
