Android 4.2.2 Video & Play Store Problems

Android 4.2.2 quit playing videos from the web, & on YouTube. Can play already saved videos.

YouTube example: select a video, loads picture but doesn't automatically play. Screen then goes blank black with white arrow. Touching arrow just yields blank black screen. Nothing happens.

At same time, Google Play Store quit functioning. Either: NO CONNECTION - RETRY; or BACKGROUND DATA NOT ENABLED; or ERROR 495; or just blank white screen. Usual recommended fixes did nothing.

Did factory reset. Tested YouTube; it played. Play Store worked. Set everything up again minus several apps. Short time later, back to no video & Play Store problem.

Suspected app REMO MORE was erasing 'junk files' automatically even though not set to do so, possibly erasing good files. Did another factory reset. This time only reinstalling 4 apps: ES FILE EXPLORER, SIMPLE NOTEPAD, NORTON MOBILE, & VLC. After reset, tested YouTube, it worked. Play Store worked. Short time later, back to no video & Play Store problem!

Suspected VLC. Removed. Made no difference.

Ready to do another reset, but expect same results.

Can't download any apps either by Play Store or via Google Chrome, so trying fixes with different browsers unreal at this time.

Now what?

Tablet: Ellipsis 7
Browser: Google Chrome 34.0.1847.114
Play Store 5.6.8
YouTube 5.5.27
Not rooted.

Re: Android 4.2.2 Video & Play Store Problems

I'm now on my 4th factory reset in 2 days.

Reset #3: I didn't choose 'Back up my data' or 'Automatic restore' prior to reset. Only loaded a couple apps. After reset #3, YouTube worked. Play Store worked. Within about 15 minutes, it was back to no videos, no Play Store. Happened about the time I was on Play Store & saw message upper left screen that said 'Background Data Restricted'.

I am on 4th reset right now. I need to prevent the thing from updating because I think that's what's causing this.

If I can't play videos, & can only get half of the web, I imagine I'll be reducing my provider's data plan. There's no use to pay a huge amount of money each month for half of the web.

Re: Android 4.2.2 Video & Play Store Problems

I may be on Reset #5. I've lost track.

Most recent reset: Ran thru a series of tests including restarts, cache cleaning, etc. Able to play video. Did not sign into Google Play Store. Had to sign into Google Drive though to download my stored apps. Everything working fine, until I did a shut-off, turn back on. No-play video situation again. Checked Google Play Store app info. Just as I thought. It updated from 4.6.17 to 5.7.10

Probably not just Play Store updating & causing this. It's just the darn thing updating. I checked all the apps. Seems Play Store was the only one with an "Uninstall Updates" up in the corner. Could Play Store updating be causing this whole scenario? I uninstalled the updates on Play Store, but it didn't help.

I'm going to do one more reset, and this time I won't sign into any Google products & see what happens.

How do you stop the thing from updating on it's own. Is there a choose 'do not update, notify me first' selection somewhere?

Re: Android 4.2.2 Video & Play Store Problems

I guess I'm done with this piece of work. It worked fine for 11 months & then it went sour.

The last reset I've done, which is the 5th or 6th in 2 days....

I did not reinstall any of my apps. I did not transfer any of my saved files. I did not sign into any Google accounts or go into the factory installed Google drive/Google Play Store/YouTube apps.

I ran it thru some tests... Connecting to internet with Chrome, going to YouTube, playing a video, cleaning Chrome history, cleaning cache, retrying, etc.

Worked as it should. Played videos from the web/YouTube, etc.

Did a full turn off, then turn on.

Google Play Store didn't update this time. It stayed the same version. Only thing i noticed once more was 'Background Data Restricted' up in the left corner of screen appearing. I went to check if my background data was restricted. The menu choice on the data page where you would normally choose 'Restrict Background Data' was gone now. How it gets restricted without me turning it off is a wonder.

I think what this is, is the system updating when I turn off & on again. So, this is a waste of time. Unless I can stop the system from updating by itself, I'll just be going in circles. Piece of junk.

Re: Why has my Android 4.2.2 stopped playing Videos & has a Play Store Problem?

Let me widdle this down to what appears to be the cause of the problem....

After doing another factory reset (which was either the 6th or 7th), it would play video, as long as I didn't turn it off or restart it. I left it on, even while charging, for a day & a half.

Then, I did a restart, and it went right back to the no playing of videos from on-line. Just like before, it will still play already saved videos. However; it will play YouTube videos only if it's on the YouTube full desktop site. Unfortunately it doesn't play them on other website desktop pages.

So....

It loses ability to play on-line videos after restarting, or turning off completely & then on again. (Mobile data & WiFi were off at time of restart).

I'd like to add, I did manage to download Dolphin browser after one of the resets & it made no difference.

Does it receive updates while on-line, & then later during restart, does it install them automatically? Or can something be wrong on startup involving file corruption?
