Why has the text app' on Nougat only got letters for names now?

Before the update to Nougat a few days ago my text message list showed peoples names;now I only get a single letter.If you have three people beginning with the letter 'J' how are you meant to know which one it is?

I have 2 apps on my device Messenger which just shows the letter, BUT Messaging shows the contact NAME if they are a contact, OR the person's number, if not. So I use Messaging.

Thanks for your reply. I have a phone with Marshmallow and one with Nougat,so I can tell they are not the same.On Nougat,if I tap the letter the name shows,but on Marshmallow the single letter had the name already alongside.So tapping a letter "J" for Jim might also take me to Joe,whose name I don't want at that time.
