Why have my HTC One's files become corrupt?

Basically, I was using the file manager on my HTC one and I wanted to find my PDFs quickly. I figured that sorting the files by type would be the fastest solution... but it caused the file manager to crash. Now every time I try to access the file manager it has to close due to an error, and when I connect my HTC One to my PC there are no longer any files on the phone.
Anyone have a clue what's wrong and how to fix it?

Welcome to Android Central! Try booting into Recovery and wiping the cache partition, which won't erase any personal data.
