Why I took back my AT&T One X

Hey Icebike
interesting question. I have a Atrix2, it has lots of problems, and I'm this.king about getting a OneX. I have a sensory hearing defect. How does the audio output compare possibly to the Atrix2?
Hope you or someone e can help out
thank you

It comes to me as no surprise that the HTC One X would have issues. HTC makes some nice phones with great features but they have lots of problems. Sense is buggy and from what ive seen from experience, it slows the phone's performance. I will give HTC some credit because it has improved Sense but its still not perfect but no custom UI is perfect. The best way to go is having stock Android because from what ive seen from experience, phones that run stock Android have far less issues than phones with custom skins.

I actually took mine back yesterday and was wondering about that same thing(multitasking). It seems like it works just like and iPhone would, faux multitasking is what I call it. And to go deeper on that, try watching YouTube and the go to the browser and then go back to YouTube, it starts over every time. Also using chrome if you watch a embedded video it does the same... So something was truly wrong, I was afraid that having a phone with a skin such as Sense, that updates will come slow. So I took it back and went back to my iPhone. I'll get the One S and call it a day.

I pre-ordered the One X and received it in on May 4th ahead of schedule.. I loved it.. Loved the screen and was in the honeymoon stage with the phone (so everything is always great).. I was coming from a Galaxy SII Euro-Unlocked..

A couple things I was looking for in my next phone..
1) I had an iphone for so long and I really liked the lock/unlock button on the top so I was looking for that but wasn't a big deal if not
2) Wanted a better camera phone
3) Very much dislike touchwiz and would always put a different launcher on it so I wanted to try out Sense since it looked pleasant without having to put something else overtop of it

I tried out the Galaxy Note and I really liked that as well but just too too too darn big.. I really do love the 4.3-4.5 inch range.. Just fits so nicely in my hand.. So this One X was kind of big as well.. But I am a techie so I want the latest and greatest and it seems all the higher end ones are going bigger.. (which not really a fan of)

Now down to the details.. The One X was too big but that was a preference and therefor not going to be a deal breaker for other people.. The biggest issue IMHO is that HTC has messed up on the multitasking.. Now I have been through what seems like a million forums across a bunch of websites and there is definitely an issue there.. It isn't true multitasking.. It holds whatever you were doing in the background and then when you hop back in there (no matter if it is 10 seconds or 10 minutes) it will hold and fade out and then start the app over.. Try it with your browser! Some say it's the Ram.. some say it's other things.. But whatever it is.. It isn't right..

Second thing is that Sense crashes quite a lot.. I read that the HTC agenda widget was causing some of this but obviously no confirmation from HTC themselves yet.. But I had this thing just restart without any clue what happened.. and sometimes it wouldn't even power back on for a good 5 minutes..

Now I know we are all beta testers (as per nokia lol) but I just couldn't handle all the bugs and wait for a updated firmware (whenever that would be). I had 30 days so I just took it back and i'll wait on either a definite fix on that phone or I'll look toward the Galaxy SIII (which I wasn't really excited about), or other phones that come out..

I really liked Sense and I think HTC has a great piece of hardware there.. The camera IMO was great and I loved the interface for it as well. Having both camera and camcorder buttons on there was great.. I believe it's a great phone and will be once things are ironed out.. But I just wanted to give a heads up on some things..

PS.. I never have rooted so I am not sure if some of these things can be fixed when a dev has a custom rom for it.. So if you are into rooting you might be able to go that route!

Any questions or criticism is always encouraged :-)

How was the return? Did ATT just take it back with no fuss? I'm going to return my HTC One X once my "other" phone comes this month.

Anyone who buys a launch day phone and expects it to be bug free is kidding themselves. I know most people on the forums are tech maniacs and want the new tech YESTERDAY - if you're going to do that you're going to have to put up with some growing pains. I'm a Verizon customer (no chance of switching) and there are a lot of people who love their CDMA GNex with LTE now that it's had some time to mature with updates. Personally, while i love new tech as much as the next guy I'm willing to wait a few months to let the phone mature and make sure there aren't serious design flaws (THUNDERBOLT - I guess over a year later it is now an OK phone). before I buy something - remember, Patience is a virtue.

And that is what is wrong with everyone today and their phones.
So, just bought my $500 computer, it works perfectly from day 1.
Just bought my $300 tunner for my truck, it works from day 1.
My new TV, which has software, works
The list goes on forever....except I SHOULDN'T"T expect the same of my phone? Really?

I just wanted to drop my two cents here and say two things.

1) the multitasking is a bit.. sensitive to when it kills an app but it is largely dependent on the app. For example all my games and such will relaunch often (though not always it depends on how long since I last used them) but apps like air droid are never force closed by the one x or android no matter how long they sit in the background. Also chrome does not have that issue.

2) I have yet to have sense crash on me...

I know each users experience is different and I hope yours gets better or you find what you like :)

It can't possibly be limited to the webkit core, video games reload also.

I just now loaded up Tripple Town, went into a game. Clicked a few things, pressed home.. clicked the recent apps, loaded up gtalk, pressed home.. clicked recent apps and loaded Tripple Town and it re-launched the game, loaded the level again. It did bring my back to where I was because the game itself is designed to save state on home presses but it didn't resume.. it re-loaded the game into memory.

It is probably a hybrid of both issues really. By that I mean my guess is that it is a priority issue with apps or how sense sees them. Sense obviously deems the stock browser as a low priority and I would imagine games as well. But things like ES file browser, air droid, etc... seem to either be coded differently or identified in such a way as to be a higher priority since the do not use anything that sense deems a low priority (ie web core or games) and wont clean them first for garbage collection or memory management or whatever you want to call the system that determines what gets booted and when.

Did anyone here return a HOX yet? How was your experience? Did ATT just take it back with no fuss?

Yeah. Jerry already posted that he is going to be working on getting their "in-house developers" to fix this, so hang tight. Not sure how we still have a couple people in this thread acting like either the issue doesn't exist or it's not the right answer, even after Jerry and Kevin figured it out, but, hey, sometimes stubbornness runs too deep. HTC made a mistake, whether it was intentional or not, and even if they don't fix it themselves, it will be fixed very soon by someone else and we can all breathe again and finally enjoy the phone. Regardless of what others are saying, it is not specific to stock ICS, as has already been confirmed by the AC team and I can tell you right now by holding my stock ICS Galaxy Nexus in my hand. Anyway, just keep an eye out for a fix.

I have an at&t HOX that is rooted but has a locked bootloader. Will I be able to apply the upcoming fix?

I can vouch for this not being an ICS bug. My gnex is multitasking just fine. I've tried leaving the speedtest.net app going to tapatalk, or any other app, then coming back and the test is still running. It doesn't pause the test either as it was further along in the test when I came back.

I also tried it with as many of the apps on my phone I could think of and they all keep running in the background like expected. So it must be an HTC bug that I'm sure will be fixed in the next minor update.

The specific areas where this occurs are the browser. If you leave it running, it will close the open pages.

If you want actual multi-tasking, try webOS. Pausing or stopping a background app isn't multi-tasking.

Just a minor note there.

Normal Android does exactly this, apps continue executing even after navigating away from them. This is what HTC has crippled.

...but overall android is much more enjoyable and [its] widgets are worth it for me...

I agree: I love Android and would take it over iOS any day, even unrooted. I read the other night that Apple may announce widgets or something similar for iOS 6 at WWDC in the next few weeks. Of course, that should be considered 'nonsense' until WWDC officially arrives but I wouldn't be surprised if Apple went that way, especially after they incorporated the pull-down notifications bar in iOS 5 last summer.

Do you have the white or grey version of One X?

I ask because I really love the look of the white compared to the grey but I've heard that some owners are commenting on how dirty the matte white can get. I've also read about the whole blue jeans saga.

Apparently the smudges can be removed with a bit of work but this could be a deal breaker for me & I'm not keen to hide that beautiful design in a cover :-\

WebOS is dead and nobody wants it.

WebOS was never given the backing it deserved. It was a beautiful, easy to use, friendly OS that never got the chance to mature. If Apotheker hadn't been such an idiot then it would have gone farther.

and how do a few bugs make that untrue? you think the S3 is not gonna have issues when it comes out?
