Android Central Question

So , this problem came up almost two weeks ago when I noticed that I was waking up with 30-40% battery even though it was around 75-90% before sleeping at midnight. I have tried turning airplane mode on before going to sleep and closing all the tabs and I charge with my airplane mode on to almost 80-90% but I'm still waking up at 7 or 8 am to see that there's a 40-55% battery drain.

All suggestions are welcome.

After going back to the battery usage screen, now I see some apps and their percentage.

For example, it said Firefox, used 6 minutes, 13%.

So going back to the screen shot I had uploaded. I think this is what it confirms:

Basically in 7 hours, I had done nothing but kept the display off, and it drained down to 70%. Didn't use any apps.

Interesting, are you not using it and just testing battery stand-by?

Yes, I'm just testing it on standby.

The person's whose tablet it is asked me to help with the battery performance, or contact Lenovo since it's under warranty (less than 2 months old).

They noticed similar standby problems. Leaving it in standby overnight, with all apps closed, was draining the battery by 50-60%.

Gotcha, have it tested in safe mode see if still draining.

Tap the menu button at the upper right, then tap "Show full device usage" to see what system processes might be using battery.

Here's a screen shot.

When the tablet case cover is closed, the screen does look off.

Update: Battery drained from 66% to 0% overnight, even in safe mode.

Once it's fully charged again, I'll try removing the cover and seeing how the performance is in standby mode (display turned off).

Thanks for updating, sounds like going have to warranty it.

The main thing I'm wondering is if the screen is repeatedly turning on for some reason, even while it's idle. If that happens enough, it could certainly contribute to battery drain (and would explain why Screen is the top battery user in the stats).

Good point

Good point

Tablet is charged, now, and removed from case. I'll see how it behaves for the rest of the day in standby.

Ok, a few more tests.

8 hours with the tablet without the cover. Battery only drained 2% in 8 hours, which is even better performance than the Galaxy Tab S4, even though the Lenovo's battery has 2/3 as mAh.

I put the cover back on and closed the lid. Same problem after 30 mins, the screen is on for those 30 minutes. This time, I audibly heard a vibration feedback 15 - 30 seconds after I closed the lid. So something is making the screen turn back on.

I then tried keeping it in the cover, but placing the tablet screen side down. Same problem after 30-35 minutes, the screen stays on the whole time.

I don't visibly see any reason why the screen would stay on. The screen is off when I initially close the tablet cover. I guess I could take a picture of the tablet in the case with the lid closed. To see if you can notice anything odd.

But other than that, I think the best recommendation would be to not keep it in its cover when not using the tablet, and to only use the cover when actively using the tablet and wanting to keep the tablet upright hands free. Which is going to be annoying. Or, maybe try a new case.

Also, unrelated, but I asked a question about a difference I noticed between these Lenovo and Samsung tablet here. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Perhaps the case doesn't fit correctly, and is causing one of the buttons to be pressed accidentally, thereby causing the screen to wake up. Another possibility would be a faulty smartcover feature -- normally, a smartcover should cause the screen to sleep when closed, but maybe something glitchy in that regard could be waking the screen. (I'm not sure if that tablet even has a smartcover feature -- I know that my Lenovo Tab M8 FHD doesn't.)

How do you know if a tablet has a smartcover feature or not? For example, on my Galaxy Tab S4?

When the cover is initially closed, the display does turn off. It's just that I guess it's turning on 15 - 30 seconds later.

Between yesterday and today, I had examined the tablet with the cover closed, and would lift it a few millimeters, and it would still stay closed. If I lifted it a few more millimeters, then it would open. But when I place it down and close the cover, I guess something is causing it to awake 15 - 30 seconds later.

Smartcovers usually work by a magnetic sensor in the bezel of the device somewhere. There's a weak magnet that's embedded in the corresponding place on the smartcover, such that when you close the cover, the sensor detects that magnet and puts the screen to sleep. Some devices might use the proximity sensor instead, but I think most use the magnetic sensor. You can usually test this by passing a magnet (like a refrigerator magnet) slowly over the entire bezel of the device, and see if a certain spot makes the screen go to sleep.
