LG Optimus G Pro usless while in a call, Why?

I am trying to help my mom who I don't live with so I don't know exactly what she did or if the phone is broken.

When she makes a phone call (or receives) the screen goes black and she can not get the screen to turn on and or move around on the phone or even to hang up the phone.
The other person has to hang up for her to use the phone again.

The phone works fine when not in a call.

She restored her phone and it still does it.
OS 4.4.2

Any ideas on what could of happened?

Thanks

Welcome to Android Central! It sounds like the proximity sensor is either blocked or is malfunctioning. When you start a call, the proximity sensor will become active, and will turn off the screen if it detects that the phone is up against something (usually your ear). The screen should remain on if nothing is close to the front of the phone. Ask your mother if she has a case or a screen protector on, because either of these could potentially block the proximity sensor and cause problems.

Thanks,
She had a screen protector that was peeling off at the top making it think something was near it.

Peeled it off and it works.

Thanks again.

My bet? It wasn't the screen protector, but the dust a loose one (it's still a bit sticky on the phone side) collects. Some metallic dust near the sensor would do it. Always start putting the protector on at the top for that reason. (And make sure - use transparent tape - that there's no dust on the screen that will get trapped under the protector.
