Samsung Galaxy S5 only charging via USB & Hardware ID Missing.

Hiya,

I've had my S5 for 6 months & never hard any issues up until now. Since yesterday it won't charge via a mains charger & will only charge plugged into the pc via USB but very slowly, it's charged about 20% in 2 hours, when before it would be fully charged in less than an hour. I also noticed that since yesterday it now says "Hardward ID Missing" when I plug it into the pc, which it never did before either. So I'm guessing the two are linked? Any ideas?

Thanks very much :)

Hello. If you could ask a store to let you try another cable. They have been known to be or become faulty, also on the Note 3, and Samsung have replaced them foc in the past.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S5 only charging via USB & Hardware ID Missing.

Hiya, it's not to do with the charge. I've got two 3.0 wall chargers and it now won't charge with either of them, it will only charge with the 3.0 usb cable but really slowly. thanks.

OK. Welcome to Android Central.

If you have tried 2 seperate cables as well, and possibly a regular usb2.0 cable:
Then the next things woud be to see if it charges any faster with the phone off.

Look at the Battery Usage screen and scoll down to the highest using apps to see if there is a rogue app that should not be taking so much power.

Failing that, as @Spookdroid said in the thread below, it could be an issue with the charging port, the charging software
(it regulates the charge at different points of the charging cycle - a 50% battery has less resistance and takes a higher rate than @ say 5% and 95%),

or the battery.

If it's a phone hardware / software issue, again a visit to a carrier store, repair centre or Samsung Experience Center is on the cards. They may isolate it on the spot.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S5 only charging via USB & Hardware ID Missing.

Thanks for the help. I've tried it turned off charging via the usb and it doesn't charge any faster either :(. I would guess it's something to do with the software, as it seems odd that it was working fine up until now and all of a sudden won't charge via mains & is saying hardware ID missing. Could an error with the software stop it recognizing a mains charger?

Re: Samsung Galaxy S5 only charging via USB & Hardware ID Missing.

That I don't know. I was assuming it was a cable direction issue. I haven't heard that term. Have you tried to connect it to Kies software on a pc, that would ensure it had the latest drivers.

I will try to ask ambassador @Rukbat or another to have a look here later.
What he doesn't know.....

Has anyone found a solution for this one.
It does not charge from the mains adaptor power and I have several.
Pull out the cord and put into a computer and it works fine but really slow.
I have a portable charger which works and then I plug the charger into the mains which is a but at least it charges fast.

I have just come across the same problem.

To fix this you need to turn off USB debugging.

Here are the steps to do this:

- Go to the menu and launch Settings.
- Tap on “About Device” menu and then tap on “Build Number” 7 times.
- After tapping it for 7 times, you’ll now get a prompt that says that you’re a developer now.
- Now go back to the Settings menu and you’ll now be able to view Developer options.
- From the Developer options, you can un-tick the box that says USB Debugging.

Problem solved.

Why would the USB debug do this? And how? I've had the same issue and hadn't used my phone in two months and today I decided to plug it into the pc and ta-da.... Charging! But I do not want to have to do this all the time as its slow to charge. I've tried several chargers and charger heads as well in the wall with no luck.

Kieran, a very big thankyou! Haven't had a Samsung since the days before smartphones and have been Motorola since then. Have looked at many many articles about this and yours is the only one that worked. And it's so simple! Cheers. Mikey

Hi. So I was able to get into developer status using your method but the USB debugging was already unchecked and problem with charging only via laptop USB still persists. Any other ideas? Cheers. Troy

Welcome to Android Central.

The default connection mode changed with Android 6.0 as a security measure.
Have you seen this :

Inside Marshmallow: USB connection options Inside Marshmallow: USB connection options | Android Central

I did see those options. Changing them made no difference it seemed. I have done a factory reset & am going thru all of the questions now (with only 10% on the battery) we'll see what happens. The phone's not taking charge in this process so I'm not too hopeful.

Welcome to Android Central! Have you also tried a different cable? Cables can fail unexpectedly, which can impact charging and/or data transfer.

I'm having the same issue and seems problem started after accepting the tmobile update to marshmallow. My usb debbugging was not on so this wasn't my problem. The charging through pc is the only things that is working. When i plug the phone up in outlet after connecting to pc it charges for a few sec and then stops. I have factory rest the device and still no success.

Any option anyone have found to fix this problem?
Thanks

Was really happy with my s6 edge but now it's only charges when plugged into the computer.
Ive tried all the suggestion none work. THis seems to have happened after I last updated the system to the latest operating system.

SUch a hassle. Please help me fix it.

Turning off USB debugging on my Tmobile Note 4 worked for me!!! Thanks for saving me from buying a new charging port.

The phone was previously only charging via connecting to my PCs USB port.

After a week of charging batteries with an external charge, I finally found a solution to the issue:

"Galaxy s5 won't charge while plugged in but WILL charge when in pc usb hub"

I went into Settings, Battery, and turned OFF "App power saving"

and now I can charge.
