Why is security tighter with the latest software upgrade

Since my phone upgraded to Android 7 a few days ago I have been unable to use any public wifi or mobile data. With public wifi I always get a security message from Google saying the network isn't secure yet I was able to use the same networks previously with no problems. Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge running Android 7

I would think that to be a good thing.... Public unsecured WiFi is a great way to get your device hacked.
