I have a Galaxy S4 I9500 unlocked device, newly bought from an ebay seller in China and it is running on Android 4.4.2. When move to Settings -> More -> About device, there is no Software Update option, so there is no way to check whether my device has any updates or not.

Can anyone please tell me why this option is missing, is it common or rare?

Meanwhile this device is picked by Samsung Smart Switch app, and all IMEI, serial # etc. are genuine.

I found the SYSTEM UPDATE right under ABOUT PHONE. It is separate and not part of the ABOUT PHONE option. What carrier are you using? Most have sent out an update to Android 5.1

I don't use any carrier at the moment, because I want to solve some issues with phone specially battery draining issue. Last night I left the phone with over 50% of battery life. Stuffs like wi-fi, gps, high brightness and many other battery consuming things were turned off and still this morning complete battery is used up, the idle mode had consumed majority of the power all the previous occasions.

Here in Sri Lanka we don't have contracts rather use prepaid/post paid sim cards.

Welcome to Android Central to both of you! When there is no System Update option, it is usually because your phone has been rooted and is running a custom ROM, or you have a fake or cloned S4. Fake S4's often have a Mediatek processor, rather than the usual Qualcomm Snapdragon or Samsung Exynos. Run CPU-Z on your phones and see what kind of processor it's running.

Welcome to Android Central! If it's a knockoff or clone, then there are no official updates, since it's not from Samsung. You could try messing around with rooting and installing a custom ROM, but that may be difficult, since custom ROMs are designed for specific devices. Otherwise, I can only recommend making sure you get a genuine device in the future.

Ok. It looks like you have an S4 from Rogers in Canada. The device is over 3 years old. Samsung has most likely stopped supporting it.

In this case, like B Diddy said, you would have to look at rooting and flashing an AOSP ROM to go any further than 4.3

I've bought a SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 two month ago more or less. I always thought that when you buy a smart-phone, it's un-rooted but when I saw your reply I checked my CPU-Z app and I realized my phone has been already rooted. I assumed it would be completely optional whether you want it rooted or not. Now my question is that is it safe to use apps like UnRoot to unroot it? :)
