Why is WhatsApp showing the wrong picture?

[Android Central Question]

On WhatsApp went back to February looking for a particular picture that was sent to me. When I found it, it showed the correct thumbnail (smaller image) put when I opened selected the image to view it, it blurred for about 5 seconds and then showed a completely different picture. Worse, the picture it showed is a picture that only I have. There is no way this other person could have this picture. Even if they did, the conversation reads:

ME: Send me the graph pictures
HIM: Alright, give me a minute
*He sends the pictures*
ME: These are for lab 4 right?
HIM: Ya
ME: Thanks.

I included that so you understand that at the time it must have been a picture of the graph or else the conversation would not have continued that way.
1). What is wrong?
2). The picture shows up as having been sent to me. Is it possible that WhatsApp has now given this picture to the person?

the only thing i could think of is that the picture that is there now was renamed to the same name as the picture that was supposed to be there.

i tried that myself and was able to successfully copy your problem.

go to your file manager, open internal memory>WhatsApp>media>images, and find the picture in question see if they have the same name or something
