Why isn't my text message notification sound used instead of the default notification sound?

I have the moto z3, using the messages app for text messaging. In the messages app I changed the notification sound in the settings but when I get a text it is still the default notification sound set on the phone that I hear. Any ideas?

Welcome to Android Central! Is this for a message thread that's already established? An established thread will continue to use the same notification tone it was using when it first started. A brand new message thread should start using the new one you chose. You should be able to change the notification tone associated with an existing thread by selecting that thread, tapping Menu>Details>Notifications, and adjust the tone there.
