Why Maps shuts down on screenlock?

I use Honor 7x which has got Oreo update recently. While my phone was running in Nougat, I used the Android Maps navigation while I rid motorcycle with having my device in my trouser pocket with earphones plugged in and the screen locked. I was getting route instructions continuously like even for an hour with the screen locked. But after the Oreo update, the Maps-app reads instructions for few mins and goes silent because the app is getting closed after a while while the screen is locked. Is there a way I can have the Maps app keep running and instructing me until I close the App myself?

Not by changing Maps. But if you install Proximity Service, you can have the screen go blank when the phone is in your pocket (facing your leg) so you don't use battery for the screen and so that the lock screen doesn't activate. That should keep Maps running.

You can thank Huawei's aggressive background task management for that. I no longer own an Honor 7X, and I can't recall exactly how to do so, but you can disable background-task killing for specific apps, and if I were you, I'd do so immediately.
