Why phone app disappeared under other apps before I could answer call

Pixel 2. Latest op sysrem. My phone was ringing. I wanted to accept the call but I must have hit something else. Other open apps were in the way of the phone app. I tried the phone icon and home but could not get back to the phone app in time to answer.

Welcome to Android Central! If you're ever actively using some other app when you get a phone call, you should see a notification at the top of the screen for the call. Tap Answer there to answer the phone. If you somehow minimize that notification, swipe down the notification panel and look for it there.
