Why red battery icon and screen dim quickly?

Ive got a new Doogee S40 running Android 9.0.
A problem started when battery level went down to 20%. The battery icon started to be outlined in red and the screen started dimming after around 5 seconds.

I ensured the following:
a) Screen saver was and is 2 minutes
b) Battery Saver is off
c) Battery Manager is off
d) Standby Intelligent Power Saving is off

I have restarted the phone more than 5 times since this began. There has been no change in the red outline or screen fading.

When battery indicator goes in red it sounds like it went into battery save mode even if you have it off , can you adjust the brightness slider up?

Yes that can be slid up and down ok

That's my assumption too, that it is in a mode even if it says that mode is off.

At least you can move the brightness up or down, when do u usually start charging the device again?

Welcome to Android Central! Does it also happen in Safe Mode? https://www.hardreset.info/devices/doogee/doogee-s40-pro/safe-mode/. If not, then some 3rd party app you installed probably also has some kind of battery saver mode turned on.

It still has 75% battery so it may be Wednesday!

Yes the red battery icon outline - and the screen dimming after 5 seconds - is still happening in Safe Mode

SUCCESS! Thanks for the idea of Safe Mode. I found the app "Power Saving Mode" and sure enough, it was in "Super Mode" so I changed it to "Normal" and the phone righted itself!

Glad you found the problem! Is this a 3rd party app that you installed, or something that came with the phone?

It came with it

Power Saving Mode seems to be an app built in to Android 9.0, maybe by Doogee as part of their package?
