I've had my atrix 2 for a few weeks now and I love it. Ive had several Android phones from G1 on up. Im not a noob with computers and following directions and figuring things out. I was just wondering whats the advantages of doing this ? Will I still be able to get ICS update when/if its handed to us if I root it? I've been debating on doing this since I say XDA came out with a method just to do it. I would just like a little more info on advantages before do it. The only device I ever rooted/hacked was the first IPOD that was for windows. but Im confident that I wont mess my Atrix 2 up.

Whats the difference of the launchers that are on the market place and the ones you can setup on your phone when its rooted..

Sorry for all the "newb" questions..

Lol but I do want to. Since I made this post a little while ago I've been doing extensive research about this. I just have a few more questions that I need answered and I guess if no one will help me on here ill just keep looking.

Why do you want to root your phone if you don't know why you should? What are your other questions? I don't have a problem helping you at all but i'm not gonna convince you to root your phone if you don't know what you stand to gain by doing so. Would you send your son out on to the football field against NFL players if he's never played before and didn't know what he was doing? LOL @ "extensive research" in one hours time

Go over to XDA and do a LOT of researching. Rooting is not for everyone. It all depend on what YOU want to do with your phone not what everyone else is doing with theirs :)

I had no problem doing this on my webOS phone, but that was out of necessity. The OS had so many shortcomings because Palm was going broke and couldn't afford the number of software engineers that they truly needed. Android doesn't have that problem, so (for now, anyways) I see no reason for me to do this. My advice, since you asked for others to help is, if it doesn't do what you want it to, and rooting would help, go for it. Otherwise, enjoy your (wonderful) stock Atrix2!

Either way, enjoy! :)

Ok I rooted my phone and downloaded all the cool apps. Now my question is has anyone overclocked the phone yet?

Root to do the things that you need it for, like using Titanium Backup to back up all your apps, or Root Explorer to clean up or install apps that may be a little tricky. Otherwise, enjoy the phone as it is

lots of reasons.

#1 more control over device functions
#2 useful root apps as described above
#3 theming
#4 system tweaks (build.prop, custom scripts, memory management, etc)
#5 remove bloatware

i would however, strongly advise against rooting until you take some time to get an overview on:
adb
android file systems
what to not touch

it's better to ask and learn, then crash and burn

You can backup all ur apps using MyBackup, free, no root needed. The stock file explorer can install apps fine too, no root needed. To be honest, there really isnt much to root for right now. Once we get an sbf and a fully functioning recovery, its on!
