Why the sudden shift from the 5x to 6p

I thought everyone was pumped for the 5x and not the 6p back from the polls a month or two ago. now that they are both announced it seems like the table flipped....do you think these are just fanboys or are you guys truly impressed by the 6p once you saw it in hand in videos.. Everyone was saying how ugly the 6p was now everyone wants it.. Myself I am undecided on how I feel about the look of it.

A month ago everyone was just commenting on renders and rumors. Now we've seen actual hardware and specifications. And make no mistake, once regular people start receiving them the conversation will shift again. As we go from speculation to hard information to actually living with it, the stuff people notice and care about changes too.

I was all for the 5X because I loved the original nexus 5 to death, and I figured the 5X would be the same as the 6P with just a slightly lesser processor and different form factor. I also assumed the 6P would be priced so much higher I wouldn't even want to consider it.

But then it turned out to have a different type of screen (lcd vs amoled, which wasn't the best ever in the n5, a little washed out, and I saw journalists say the same at the event), no stereo speakers, worse front facing camera, lower screen-to-body ratio (than both the 6P and the original N5), thicker with a smaller battery (than the 6P), 2GB ram, etc. Suddenly, while I knew it would still be a great phone and I'd be 'happy' with it, it felt like as a $429 investment, it wasn't as big of an upgrade to the original N5 as I thought. For $70 more I could get a phone that was a pretty significant upgrade in every way and much more future proof. Hence, shifted interest to 6P

Yeah I think on paper initially the N5 looked like was also going to be the same specs just shrunk. Similar to what Sony do with their Mini range. However it's a disappointing small brother IMO.

I love the look of the 6P in the hands on videos too. The most premium Nexus ever. I'm saving to buy in January.

Yeah the 5x is a big disappointment in my eyes. They really should of went for 3gb of ram in that thing for the price they are trying to get for it. I just returned the Moto Pure today and I'm also not a fan of the 808. The GPU is terrible and is a battery leech.

I was initially excited about the 5X as I wanted to go with a smaller phone this year that improved on the Nexus 5 form factor (which I loved btw). But then as rumored spec leaks were confirmed, the 5X turned out to be the less desirable option for me.
  • Only 32 GB of storage space
  • Camera features neutered (no EIS, no 240 fps)
  • Only 2 GB of RAM
  • Mono speaker...this is not as important for me but still kind of a let down.
  • Plastic build....sure it's superficial and I would have been fine with it, but then all the other aforementioned things piled on..

All the hands on with the 6P and good first impressions sealed the deal for me (even though I had already ordered it as soon as the store was live). I'm also used to the size of phablets as I have a Nexus 6 currently, and I'm excited to see that it seems to be easier to wield. It also looks just damn good.

Pretty much the same for me. I did expect the 5X to be more midrange and was okay with that. What I didn't expect was how high quality the 6P was going to be for only $70 more. I realize in non US markets the price difference is much larger but for that little it just seemed crazy to not at least check it out so I ordered both. The 6P might end up being too big for me but if not it would be silly to not go with it over the 5X.

I agree and I am one of those people. I think Nexus buyers (who aren't developers) are value shoppers. For only $70 more at the same 32gb, the 6P gives you SOOOOO much more. Plus, I really, really wanted a 64gb option. If the 5X had that, I might have gone for it.

I had an original Nexus 5 and loved the phone. I was all set to order the 5x on Tuesday, but I changed my mind during the presentation. The looks and specs were far superior for not much more money when looking at the 32GB version.

I pre-ordered an Ice Blue Nexus 5X on Day 1. If you were following the rumors & leaks, then you already knew what RAM and storage options were. The RAM was a disappointment but the Nexus 5 has showed me that I'm not the type person who needs above 32GB of storage. On Day 2, yesterday, I cancelled my pre-order. It seemed like more and more disappointing news about the 5X was coming out of the woodwork.

No EIS and only having a single front-facing speaker were the final straws for me. A Googler flat out stated the 808 chipset wasn't fast enough for EIS. This doesn't sound like a phone I wanted to keep for 2-3 years. On the other hand, the 6P could last me 3 years.

I would say most want the "Premium" (P) phone -- Simple as that.

I started to type out that the N5X has stereo front facing speakers also but then I wanted to make sure before I said anything and sure enough I would have been wrong.

I know I've read that but I'm guessing they just looked at the renders and made an assumption.

Yeah, almost all the leaks suggested it did because of the design, but when it was announced, the spec sheet sure enough said single front facing speaker. It seems like such a missed opportunity since the grill for both speakers is right there.

The original N5 was OK, it had its issues, sub par batt life, terrible GPS. After getting the N6, I'm saddened the screen is smaller on the 6p. I was hoping for the same size or even bigger. However what they packaged in the 6p looks compelling. I pre ordered one.

People were complaining all last year about the price of the N6, now Google responds by making a mid-tier device and everyone is complaining again. If you want top specs, you need to shell out for it. Your not going to get a phone with top of the line stuff, for 400 bucks. Hopefully they start shipping soon, I can't wait to start using it.

Totally agree on the Nexus 5, I've had that phone for 2 years now and I always feel like it's just me who has those same 2 issues with it.

What I don't get is how many people have anything negative to say about the phone. I don't think there's a single phone out there (not including the stupid ones made from gold or diamonds or anything like that) that I would pick over this phone even if they were just as cheap.

Aside from personal preferences like the size what does this phone not have that any other phone has? I feel like I couldn't have asked for more. From the leaks I wrote the phone off because I figured it had to be just as much if not more than last year and it would be a typical nexus with a smaller battery. Now here I am returning the moto I just got for the nexus.

Where did they really skimp in specs to cut corners? Add SD card support (never will happen with a nexus and I get why) into the sim tray like the MXPE and this may be my perfect phone.

IMHO, I'd rather spend ~200 on a new Nexus 5 2013. (you can still find them new) The new one doesn't thrill me. From all reports, the N5 '13 still kicks **** with M on it. Unless you NEED a better camera or fingerprint reader. Otherwise, the OG N5 is still a good phone, and fast.

No def not! I had the same issues with this phone drove me nuts.

I had to recently RMA my nexus, for a power button issue. So I went back to the N5 for a week. I run 5 days a week, and I use an app to help track distance and time. I would sit outside waiting 5mins for the N5 to gps lock, while the N6 would lock before I even went outside. Plus I could barely get 2.5 hrs of SoT with the N5. I'm hoping marshmallow improves on battery life.

I'm lucky to get 2 hours of SOT, I've got the moto X pure edition now but I have to return it for the nexus. I'm waiting until the last possible minute though so I don't have to go back to the N5 any longer than necessary. My GPS problem is while navigating I get constant "GPS Signal Lost" and then "Oh yeah, remember we lost signal, well you were supposed to turn a few miles back"

I'm not happy about having to go back to it but at least there is a beautiful graphite light at the end of the tunnel.
