Why Verizon has delayed the JellyBean 4.1 ota on the vzw Galaxy Nexus

I think I'm going to finally bite the bullet, unlock the bootloader, and install the leaked OTA. I'm tired of waiting.

I do have one question. When Verizon finally releases the official update, what will I have to do to get it? Revert to an older build? Or will it just download and install as normal?

It's GOOGLE'S flagship device...as stated in the email. Not that one reps words mean anything. A little advice, you will get much more accomplished with ANY customer service rep if you are friendly. Such is life.

Well maybe. But reps do not know anything specific. This a well established premise. Especially at the stores. They're mostly incompetent sales drones. So are the managers.

There are so many wonderful JB ROMs out there, why stay with stock? I love JBSourcery, and CNA, Euroshank, AOSP, and countless others are out there to try.

that does not answer his question dude, and in fact I am wondering the same thing. people stay stock because they want their device to run well and not have to mess with anything to get it that way.

I stay stock ( for now) because I have already caused too many bugs to pop up just by flashing a new kernel and over clocking a little bit. I dont want to risk it since I need my phone to work right all the time especially at work.( where with my tinkering it froze 3 times and restarted randomly dozens of times just in one day just form the little stuff i did to it) I know most ppl have no issues messing with their gnex...but for the rest of us we do or we just dont want any head aches that might come from messing around with it.
I probably would flash the leaked JB if it was an official full build and not labeled as a test build. again I can afford to risk and issues or down time right now. and for the most part stock everything works fine. :)

Anybody think it has anything to do with the iphone(y) 5 coming out! I think they want to sell a ton of the iphone 5's and if the nexus phone with Jelly bean is better and smoother- why spend the money on an iphone 5 when you can have better with the SIII or the nexus... Idk just throwing it out there....

I'd buy that theory.

Fair question. I used to be reasonably proficient with technology & the command line, but as I've gotten older I've forgotten a lot of that stuff. This seems like the simplest first step.

if google truly cared one bit....they would enforce the hell out of the carriers to release jb update around the same time the ijunk is going to be shipped out. 09/21/12.

reason i say this is because for those who dont root or unlock for whatever reason (which there are countless reasons) they have something to look forward to and be able to "show off" to their ijunk friends and not worry about those people gloating that oh my ijunk does this and this and this while people stuck on ics or lower go oh ya cool...mine will be doing that...some day? darn i wish my phone did that, that looks cool i wonder if my phone can do that or will do that...oh well it looks like ijunk is way better than my phone now, ok cool time to switch. thus losing another android user.

this NEEDS to be highly enforced by google bc its ultimately THEIR product and its their reputation that looks bad making ijunk look superior. google should fine carriers somehow and be like look, we have the greatest and latest update available, implement it, asap. or else.

if jb isnt released by next week across all or most carriers. ijunk will sell another trillion phones and half of them will be those android users that are not into this rooting scene.

Why you'll never have the latest version of Android | Android Central

If you want speedy updates on Android, your options are purchasing a Nexus directly from Google or rooting. If you like Verizon's coverage (no, I didn't dare say service) then you can remove option 1. Just the way it is folks. Nature of the beast.

still not an excuse for them to delay the process. "old phone" or not, JB needs to be released across any capable android device starting with gnex and any phone thereafter ensuring consistency. the gnex will have a successor which will still need JB.

Trends unchanged the Galaxy Nexus's successor will not be running Jelly Bean. It will be running Key Lime Pie or whatever the next version of Android is at that time. Whatever it ends up being called, I know my gnex will be running it:D

You will not receive OTA updates with a custom recovery, such as CWM or TWRP, "stock" or rooted. Trust me, once you see how awesome these custom roms are I doubt you'll ever want to take an OTA again, BUT reverting back to stock is as simple as clicking a button using a toolkit such as Wug's. They are as stabile as stock if not MORE stabile and provide lots of functional customizations. Got my phone on launch day (kept it stock for a few months) and it still feels fresh and new because of the amazing dev community for this device. Read the first page of the Wug's Toolkit sticky in the rooting/roms/hacks subforum and Cyber's sticky. Plenty of friendly and knowledgable help here if you run into ANY trouble, but I doubt you will. I read for days and days regarding how to unlock/root and could've kicked myself after doing it and realizing how easy it was to do. Rooted and rom'd gnex is a beast. I'd recommend AOKP for your first rom. Also it could be your last, you never NEED to flash another, but flashing roms/kernels/mods becomes a bit of a hobby. Once I used my computer to unlock and root, I've never used it for my gnex again. All done via my handset in just a few minutes. Also, I use Nova Laucher simply to backup my homescreens. MyBackupPro or Titanium Backup can backup anything else if you want. I only use MBP to restore data (think passwords and game data), my mms/sms, calendar, alarm clocks as Google backs up everything via the cloud, but you could backup your apps with then too for added security. Like I said, any questions just ask. We've all been there.

Oh man are you in for a surprise. You CAN get hardcore and unlock/root using adb and fastboot, but there are "one-click" methods available. No, it's not one click but it's as simple as following a few directions and a few clicks. We tend to promote Wug's toolkit here, but if you seach "galaxy nexus rooting toolkit" I"m sure you'll find others. At the very least, check it out. I'll make it even easier for you. BTW I'm not exactly a spring chicken. After playing with my gnex, a few anti-tech savvy (other than Bloomberg and work platforms) traders (all 40+) unlocked and rooted their phone using this toolkit. Now one of them tends to show me the newest feature of XYZ rom. It's hilarious in a very cool way.

Same deal....also mind you these guys are on here constantly and are readily available should you have questions (as are the rest of us).

Thanks for the answer and for the tips, ConTejas, but I'm on OS X and am not aware of any toolkits or one-click solutions. (I'm not buying Windows just to root my phone). If I do get around to rooting and ROMs I know the community here will be helpful.

Sorry for dragging things off-topic.

Did you post this on Google plus? Someone posted this word for word. I think it was a computer screenshot of an email.

I'd say this is about the best thread for this conversation. If it's off-topic....it's just barely off-topic:cool:

BOOM! One-click method for Mac. My pleasure. Obviously I've never used this but I trust "anything" from XDA.

Verizon is losing me as a customer after my contract is up thanks to this blatant delay in updating. I would love to just unlock and install a custom ROM, but I currently only have access to a work laptop that I can't install any software needed to do any of the easier root and unlock methods. I would have left Verizon when this phone came out if they didn't have it. I now know that was a mistake.

Once my contract is up, I'll just buy whatever the latest Nexus is (unlocked) and move to a prepaid plan offered by T-Mobile or Straight Talk or something. I'll pay about the same money as I do on my family plan and be able to get updates right away. Win-win.

It kinda shocks me that people are still having the Verizon updates issues. They are what they are. They ALWAYS take 6-8 weeks to test updates after getting them. If they fail, the process can restart.

Always been this way. Always will. If this isn't your first android on Verizon, you should know this. It has nothing to do with EOL or favorite devices, it is all about testing and procedure.

The phone is excellent as is. The update will make it better. Patience!

What I'm worried about is all this time I could've been using GoogleNow, and I can't do it. All of these latitude check-ins, all of my google offers buys, and calendar entries will hopefully enable me to configure Google Now faster once I get it.

It shocks me that people still contact Verizon to ask about unreleased software updates and/or phones and then report their findings here when it's been established over and over and over again that Verizon customer service and tech support reps do not know anything.

As a large corporation they do hear customer feedback at Verizon. One day someone is going to have a meeting and attempt to do something to speed up testing.
