Why won't my phone allow me to send a video through text?

The problem with the concept of "it should just automatically" convert the video for MMS is...exactly how do you plan to do that? HD vids are very large, and it would take a ton of compression, not to mention the burden on the RAM and processor of the phone each time it had to do this. There was a time when phone makers did build similar tech into their devices, but we're talking about days prior to real HD video.

If the iPhone can actually do this, I'd be shocked. Not saying it can't, because I've never owned one, but I highly doubt it. And I'm talking about actual MMS, not iMessage to other iPhones; I believe I read somewhere once that iMessage sets limits at 100MB -- obviously this is much higher than standard MMS, but still vids in high def would hit that mark pretty quickly.

The cloud services folks have mentioned are better means for sharing the vids, which makes the option of trying to support compression of HD videos for MMS just seem like a waste of R&D (though that's just my opinion).

EDIT: part of my point was that iMessage is a great, often over-looked service that Apple offers, I do not deny that. But it is also iMessage that allows folks to send larger video files via the messaging app on the iPhone. True MMS only supports file sizes so small that compressing HD video to fit would be nearly impossible, and unfortunately, there's no cross-platform solution with Android to use with a service like iMessage... In other words, the OP may have a legit gripe, but may have missed what the root cause of the issue is.
Yes the iPhone easily with in seconds will let you send any video that was filmed in 1080p and converts it to slightly lesser quality for iMessage and degraded quality if using mms. The point of this post wasn't to compare iphone since I never did it was simoly to vent that htc left a basic feature out and it's an option that should be left to the customer not HTC as to how they want to film their video and send it. I'm assuming my htc which is using a snapdragon 600 quad core processor should be able to easily do something the iPhone has done since the 4 running a much lower spec processor with a lot less ram than 2gb. Trust me I love this phone and ill lice with its flaws or at least what I consider flaws. Just wish there was a universal carrier standard similar to iMessage. And I'm not talking about whatsapp even though that works great. I wish bigger files just sent. Carriers got to get with it. If apple can do it. Att should be able to.

I think the complaint is minor, since cloud methods do work well as has been mentioned already. But a few of you have poor reading comprehension or are just stubborn.

The OP did not complain about texting size limits. He complained about having to choose to record in low quality if he might want to text that vid later. And although I think it's minor, it is a valid complaint. My S2 doesn't make me choose. I can record in full res, and then later I can text it. Sure, the phone sends a crappy version, but it just does it and I still have the original full res recording on my phone. It's rare, but there have been occasions I decided, after recording, that I wanted to send my wife a clip, without waiting for youtube to process or whatever. The OP wanted to do the same and found out he couldn't. I wouldn't be happy either.

Semp1 better be trolling. Can't believe I just read this whole thread. Some people just are not well adjusted to life. Nice job of finding one area of the phone you don't like and completely blowing the situation out of proportion. I bet your "friends" are really going to miss your poor quality MMS videos you constantly send them.

What sucks more is that there seem to be a half a dozen of these threads in the last few days. I don't think that Semp is trolling, I think they believe this is a serious issue that is not working as intended. I just wish they'd consolidate all of these threads into one somehow.

Hahaha anyone else think semp1 is being a drama queen troll?

The phone is crippled because of this? Oh please! Honestly I can't remember the last time I wanted to send a video via mms! So I could care less! When I do take videos and share them I do it through YouTube, Facebook, or something else. This guy has got to be a troll. Lol.

And even if I did need to send a video to one specific person I would use YouTube or Facebook because the **** quality of mms video. It's worth the extra step!

I won't. I've pretty much decided a crippled phone is no better than a Mercedes with 3 wheels.

Have you tried Handcent SMS? I haven't used it for a while but many people say it's great. Maybe that one will do what you need.

Just out of curiosity, how quick is too slow for you. A small vid would be quickly uploaded to Dropbox , emails etc...so does 5 secs mms vs 10 secs Dropbox, email, etc really make that much of a difference for the 1 or 2 extra steps? unfortunately my iOS iPad I'm using to type this doesn't give me the option to voice type this reply like every other android OS does....does my iPad suck and make me wanna return it due to this fact....no...based on your argument here, it would seem that you've never been happy with any phone as EVERY one has limited functionality or features in some regard....that or you're just venting, which is fine too. I like the earlier reference to sticks and fire...I have the option to rub sticks to get fire, but I've never ever done it...are there some programs that you choose to watch in standard def rather than high def? I get your point about having options, but a least understand that sometimes when a function is replaced by a much better solution, the former becomes obsolete in just a matter of time....are you upset that the old cable boxes are pretty much a thing of the past....it's an option because irs been done, but there's no way your cable company is gonna let you use that in favor of a digital box...

I agree with your point, but in this case it's actually the exact same number of steps (taps) to share with Google + as it is to send it in a text.

Yes like with gosms black bar on the bottom. Makes it very hard to type since keyboard rides unnaturally high and just plain ugly. Chomp is the only one that looks nice on the htc at the moment. Don't really understand how text apps drop the ball with the option key as a black bar. Kind of counter productive and needless. Hopefully the htc becomes popular enough where it forces apps to change their format. I mean Facebook is forced upon us as an app in this phone and doesn't fill the screen but the mobile web page version looks the exact same and does. The black bar is unnecessary.

This is the exact same thing as someone complaining that their car doesn't have a manually operated horn that you have to reach outside the window to squeeze. They're right, it doesn't because that's old and silly. Now it has one on the steering wheel. This absolutely just requires thinking, "oh, I can send it more efficiently through any number of better methods, but because this one obsolete one doesn't work, I'm going to get mad. Guess what, your appendix doesn't work, it's been replaced by more efficient processes. Complaining to the manufacturer won't help.

The problem is the best text app presently for the htc one is the stock app. The other apps either don't function properly with group text like chomp or have a black bar at the bottom and make it very hard to use the keyboard accurately. Once the htc gets 4.2 with the baked in group text chomp should function properly. We'll see though. But I like the sarcasm A+ for effort.

I get why it's frustrating and I'm not saying it shouldn't be, that's 100% your call. What I'm saying, is that after a few days of alternative methods that make much more sense, perhaps it's time to consider that without changing the methodology, the results will not change. I'm not being sarcastic, at least not maliciously. I'm illustrating the point that the text app, any text app, is the wrong tool. It's like using a claw hammer to knock over a building.. yeah, it might work in a way, but there are better tools that are designed to handle the task. After all of these threads, this really feels like a paradigm issue; which is solved only by learning new information and opening up to a wider view.

And no I'm not trolling. Just not used to a phone not being able to properly text a video clip and down convert it on its own. The fact that there is an actual mms resolution feature in itself is quite ridiculous. But I do love the phone. As you can see from my signature I have the developers edition so I like many of you payed a lot of money for my phone and even though the feature is considered unimportant. The text app is still flawed. Once I found out chomp worked well with it. I instantly retracted most of my complaint. So I'm sorry you feel I'm trolling. But I'm not. I'm just discussing which is what a forum is intended and originally was wondering how to do it until I found out it, it wasn't possible.

I know you're responding to someone else here, but I do get the sense you feel like people are attacking you (and with the word troll thrown out there, that's pretty understandable). It is not my wish to attack you at all, and if I am coming off that way, I apologize. I'm really interested in finding an economical method for you to get your videos from your camera to your intended recipient. I have no stake in whether or not you keep that particular device, etc. I think you have all the information you need to figure this out and I hope you get something worked out that keeps you happy with your device. Good luck, I'm going to back off this thread because I have a feeling I'm just one more voice in the storm here and I really don't like that people would attack your sincerity or integrity on this issue; I think you've made it pretty clear that this is something you find important and want legitimate resolution to, not to be insulted.

Exactly. Thank you. You think I insulted some ones family member with the way people instantly go on the defense "who cares if you can't mms there are better ways". Well some people don't want to put a 10 second video on YouTube. And don't care enough for good image quality just to show a stupid clip. That was all I was saying and at least 1 person got my frustration. Phones should be able to convert images by them selves to lesser quality to mms over network. It's a basic feature. That is all. And along with all the great superior methods and features available to share videos phones should always retain the basic ones. No matter how useless some people feel they are. It says something that this phone is pretty much one of the only phones that doesn't or is unable to do this. Obviously other companies feel the option is still wanted.

Thanks I do appreciate that. And its hard to tell some times if people are trolling or not. I don't blame people. Often it's hard to see the forest for the trees and maybe I am not seeing the big picture and just focusing on a little detail but I'm definitely not trolling.

I apologize if I came off as hostile. It was never intended.I just get frustrated when obviously sincere people (pretty sure you agreed with me earlier on some topic) can't, well see the forest for the trees as you said. You obviously wanted help but it felt like you wouldn't accept things as they were and just try to find a way around a problem. I agree with you on principal as I was upset when I first discovered the mms video problem so to speak on my OG EVO years ago. I just wanted to help and I got what seemed like needless complaining in return after having been explained that there were better ways. I'm glad you like android and I hope you learn all the many things you can do. I feel it really is years ahead of iOS as a whole. Best of luck.

If apple can do it. Att should be able to.

Lol. I just had to quote this... Should att be able to do it? Yep. Can they? Absolutely. Do they want to is the main question... And that's nope. :).

Does it though? (and yes, I'm seriously asking, not trying to be jackass...I don't have an iPhone to test).

Even for a 1 minute clip, getting a 1080p video down to 100MB is one thing, but under 5MB just seems nearly impossible, at least without completely rendering the video un-watchable. My hat's off to Apple if they do actually build this functionality into the phone, though I still believe that MMS is an antiquated protocol, and it is probably best to evolve away from it...and that's probably why HTC didn't include it. For what it's worth, I don't have the HTC One, but neither my current Samsung GS3 or my previous HTC Thunderbolt could do this unless I used the MMS setting when shooting the vid.

2nd: I agree, AT&T (and the other carriers) *should* have a better multimedia messaging solution. As I said above, MMS is highly antiquated and in this day and age, they could easily support a more robust solution that uses data networks instead of piggy-backing over the voice channels (which is what MMS does and why the file size restrictions are what they are).

If you go back and re-read your first few comments, you irrationally called the phone "crippled" and basically said it was a complete fail because of the one feature not functioning as you hoped or expected.

It may not be right, but anyone who has been around smartphones within the last few years should know that when slamming a particular device, other owners will react as if it's a personal affront.
