Why won't my Samsung Gear receive text message notifications?

Samsung Gear won't receive text message nofications

I am using a the original samsung gear and have it paired to my note 4. I am able to receive phone calls but am not able to receive any other notifications. I have tried to smart relay, updating firmware, restarting phone, using default messaging app, etc. And nothing is working. Any ideas to fix this annoying problem?

Sometimes I have that problem on gear 2. If I restart every morning it usually works
