...Not a big fan of your personal ethics.
I really don't believe that you need to be.
However, following is a perspective.
Many carriers provide refurbished or lightly used phones as warranty replacements as opposed to brand new manufacturer-sealed equipment. Nothing I can do is going to affect that. So
if I had proceeded I would have been adding to
that pool of equipment. The eventual recipient of that phone, that I had temporarily used, would be getting a device maintained in pristine condition that, while in my possession, would have either been in its original packaging or the Otterbox Defender I would have also "leased". Upon return, both the Otterbox and the phone would be cleaned and returned to new condition. I'm anal about keeping things in my possession in as new a condition as possible (I've always been that way). When I've sold electronics in the past, as I quite often do, I am usually told that they're indeed in mint condition.
So, while some may not agree with my purchasing an item knowing I may more than likely return it, I won't and don't damage or mistreat any product, just the opposite in fact.
If one is to end up with something I've previously held chances are the item is in exceedingly pristine condition. This is not written to alter your perception, I have no need or motivation to do that. I'm just providing more information.
