So we go to the pool. My wife thinks it's a good idea to take the phone with her. I leave my EVO in the truck. All is fine and we're heading home and so she puts these water toys in the bag where she'd left her phone. She then pull out her phone and it has a little water on it.

We give it a quick look and everything looks fine. The screen turns on, touch works...all is good. So we then decide to have some watermelon under the trees afterward and check the phone out (all while I'm repeating "how could you put your phone there and then throw wet water toys in there"). It doesn't look good. The screen turned on but in horrible fashion faded out and unless you power it off and back on, the screen won't display anything. You can tell the screen is on as you see light from a tight angle but that's it.

I know about the rice and all that but man, this phone got very little water on it. Even the wet indicator inside the back cover didn't change. I'll be taking it to best buy as we have insurance there. I really hope this doesn't turn into a horrible experience.

Best thing to do is NOT turn it on. Let it dry for a day or so unless you really want to make a trip to BB.

Sounds like you have the "magic bullet" one drop of water that got in thru the microphone hole and landed on the contact between the motherboard and the screen. When it dries it may be fine unless there's a mineral deposit directly on the contacts.

I was going to type "bag of rice" but then I re-read your post. I'd definitely take out the battery and just let it sit somewhere sunny but not hot for an afternoon. If you have any of that silica gel dessicant from a recently-bought gizmo, a pack or two of that inside a plastic bag works pretty well. I've dropped pretty much every phone I've ever owned in water and the bag-o-rice worked every time.

Hopefully, you won't get any fog under the glass--that's a pain.

Yeah, magic bullet sounds about right. When I took the back cover off...I only saw one drop of water on the bottom right above the USB if you have the phone face down. That was it. The screen did have some water on it but geez....it had more water on it when I placed the screen protector on.

I've had it off for two whole days and it continues to do the same thing. I get the display of "HTC EVO" at the welcome screen when powering off and then the display dies off. The screen is just black and I hear the tone when "4G" animation comes up but I can't see it. By then the screen's gone black.

i read a while back that a sprint employee recommended wrapping up the phone in a towel and leaving it in the car. don't know how hot it is out where you are but this worked wonders for me. good luck!

One thing that always worked for me in the past was to put the phone on the vents of an old tube TV or monitor and leave it there for a day or two. The dry, steady heat works wonders. Saved a few friends' phones that way.

Unfortunately(?), everything I have is flat screen these days, so I'm hosed if I get my phone wet.

I've been told the clear crystal kitty litter is the same thing as what is in those silica gel dessicant packets if you have some but I dont know if theres a static issue there or not.
A couple coworkers have dropped their phones in water or spilled their water bottle on them and they do sometimes work again after a couple days (a simple model started working after a few weeks).
you should still have hope that all is not lost yet :)

My wife spilled a glass of lemonade on her phone last night while we had dinner and the screen isn't working either. i have had it in rice bag about 12 hours and nothing...i realize that lemonade vs water is a big difference but i thought i would give it a try.

Does the Sprint insurance cover these types of accidents?

It may be too late now, but the first thing you should have done is take out the battery. Even off, water can short connections and cause damage. NEVER keep power to a device that's gotten wet inside.

Yes, Assurian covers this kind of damage, after the deductible.

Just make sure you give it plenty of time. Had a friend douse her phone, looked like it was shot; six hrs in the sun later...good as new.

Yes indeed. After all these days, just about to go to Best Buy to process a product replacement claim....I power it on and it works! Good as new. Everthing is functional and having taken the screen protector off....man, it's gorgeous. All better now! My wife is ecstatic and said she took it for granted and will baby it from now on!

Evo doesn't cease to amaze! Was commatose for a while but all well now and reunited with it's owner!

Yep, I would say as SOON as you see water, yank the battery. What I do is I place the phone in a sealed tupperware container of rice and place it on a sunny windowsill for a day or two.

My Pre got dunked once, and I used this method and was able to use the phone again.

I have to agree with taking the battery out and let it air dry for a good day or so, same thing happened with my Palm Pre, it was acting funning for a few days, but eventually dried out and no issues to date.

See the above post. Never ever power up a phone or computer after it is wet. Take the battery out ASAP and let it dry. You can put it in a oven with the door propped open at about 120 degrees but you have to be careful not to overtemp it. The other methods work just fine also. The key is DON"T POWER UP THE PHONE until you have given it a chance to completely dry out.

I always take out the battery and place it on top of dehumidifier in the basement. If you have one this works too.

The bag of rice worked for me. My wife was using her iCrap to take a picture of our 2 year old son in the bath tub and he took a swing at it and knocked it into the water. I powered it off and put it in a bag of rice for 72 hours and fired it back up and it was fine. Thankfully she move on to a Hero and is awaiting the Epic.
