WIFI connection problem at home

Until fairly recently I could start my Nexus 5
(Android 6.0.1 security patch level 6/1/2016)
in the morning and it would automatically connect to the house WIFI
(Signal strength excellent, link speed 72 mps, frequency 2.4, radio type 802.11n).
Now it no longer does that. I connect to ATT, my provider. I go to settings WIFI and choose my listed SSID. I type in the requested password and hit connect. Nothing happens. The connected icon fails to appear. I can repeat this 10 times. Finally I get a connection only to have it disappear within a minute. Eventually, if I am patient enough I do get it to connect and hold. This is painful enough that I am about to give up on WIFI.

I have seen in another thread that the router might be a problem. I am within 3 feet of the router when I am trying to connect. I have zero experience with managing routers and am hesitant to try so I thought I would try my husband's phone (Samsung Tracfone). Upon starting, it connected immediately and stayed connected. No request for password. It just worked. So I figure the problem is with the Nexus 5. Does that seem a rational conclusion?

How to fix? All help appreciated.
Thanks

It might be a problem with the N5; however, have you restarted/reset (usually the same thing) your router. Even though another device (or many other devices) connects it could still be the connection between N5 and router. If that doesn't work, you might consider reflashing the the OTA from google (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/ota). If you're going to set up adb to run the sideload (directions at the link), you may as well run the Sept. OTA.

Well, I guess my router got reset without my interference. We lost power due to a storm last night so the router was off until the power came back 9 hours later. Problems with Nexus 5 connecting to WIFI are unchanged. I did get it to connect after only 5 times re-entering my PW. Each time the PW is saved but there is no connection until finally it seems to work. But tomorrow it may not connect at all.

Sounds like hardware failure. Have you tried it on other Wi-Fi systems? Factory reset is the first step when wondering about hardware/software glitches. If you try, be sure to back up all your data as it will be wiped.
