Wifi HotSpot works on Std ROM! no root needed

You go into Menu/Settings/Wireless Networks/Mobile Networks/Access Point Names

Once in there click on Menu then New APN.
Don't delete the others. Keep them as a backup.

ATT Tracking

I just did this and it works great!! Another user noted that Att might be able to track you and charge you for tethering, any word on this? Also is there any way to get faster speeds? Thanks for to the people that made this possible!!

Doesn't seem to be working anymore. I had it set up awhile ago, deleted it for a reason I don't remember. Tried to set it up again but now won't work. Also won't save without a name.

Edit: Well i got it working.. for awhile. Then nothing, I went to the phone and there was a popup "Tethering is not authorized for this sim card number account... blah blah ". I don't know if AT&T detected it or the phone. Kinda scary.

you dont have att tethering meesage

I had this set up the other day and all of a sudden it was shutting off and id get att pop up saying i didnt have tether plan. i kept creating new apn and it has started working again.. keep trying it still works
I did read some carriers (i saw tmobile) have begun shutting it down on people ota update . if you are happy with the system youre running on id stick with forum updates and keep att out of your system.

I live in a extended network area, cant even get 3g until i cross state border from Georgia going into Florida. ATTs coverage map is not all they claim it is. Use their home site coverage map with a large grain of salt

The APN editor in CM7 doesn't have a setting for MMS Protocol. It has MMSC, MMS port and MMS proxy.
Where should I put the WAP 2.0 value?
Thanks

My HTC Inspire received an OTA update today and this no longer works. I tried re-installing my own APN several times, but I keep receiving the message that to use tethering I must contact ATT. Has anyone found a solution to this after the current update?

Riddle me this:

I upgraded to Gingerbread on my HTC 4G with ATT, and the WiFi Hot Spot is not working? My friend has the SAME phone just has not updated and her still working with the APN I put on it.

So where is the problem? ? ?
I re-wrote the APN in my phone right after the upgrade and still not working.. I worked for 1 1/2 days after upgrade to Gingerbread....... DAMN, what am I missing.:(

You may have to root and then try it out, and possibly install a custom rom. They may have fixed the issue that allowed you to do the Hotspot with the new build.

Note some people have said the trick works, you just have to ignore the message saying to enable tethering.

I was told by someone at ATT that the 2.3.3 update to the Inspire closed the ability to open the hotspot by installing a new APN. Oh well, it was only a matter of time - now perhaps time to root.
