WiFi Issues - N @ 65mbps and Low Signal

I'm on DL09 but these two issues aren't new to this release. I've had 2 problems that I was wondering if others have shared.

1) I noticed that the signal strength seemed low overall. I need to be physically within the same room AND within 10 feet or so to see full wifi strength with my N router, which is mounted high and clear of obstruction. Secondly, I note that the speed indicates only 65Mbps on WPA2/AES. Seems low to me.

2) I have another router placed on the opposite side of the house which helps boost signal strength. However, wifi management doesn't scan for a better signal and jump onto it until it loses the first signal altogether. This forces me to constantly force a manual scan and connect. Is there a way to set a signal threshold where a scan takes place to pick up the higher signal strength?

I can only speak to your 65Mbps statement. This is true on all Android phones but I can't remember why. I think Froyo fixes that, if I'm not mistaken. At some point though the bottleneck will not be the network, it will be the browsers ability to render pages quickly and the phones processor. I'd say anything faster than 65 is probably not going to make any difference.

Probably not for 99% of activities as I'm bottlenecked also by my 18Mbps bandwidth too. I guess I'm more concerned about the low wifi signal receiving strength and rescanning issue.

However, its nice that Froyo fixes the cap. Of course, we'll never see Froyo at this rate....

65mbs is pretty screaming all things concidering. but yes i get around the same dl rate. heck i only have a 20mb connection, and that only with power boost. no need to be concerned about that. do you plan on doing gigabit transfers between your phone and computer?

Hell yeah!!!!!

Seriously though, I'm more concerned about signal quality versus speed. My concern was that I'm not getting an N signal which I think ought to get me faster speeds at greater distances. In reality, I'm glad I didn't pay much for my router upgrade because I don't see much of a difference, if at all, with this device.

Your connection speed depends on your wireless router.

The fascinate uses the 2.4 GHZ band for N Wi-Fi. Some routers restrict the speed of that frequency to less than the N theoretical max speed of 300. Often it is the max G speed of 54.

The fact that the Fascinate didn't use the 5 GHZ band for Wi-Fi was a big disappointment for me....

Skyeclad - Check out an asp called wifi fixer.

It has a widget that resets the wifi receiver, forcing a reconnect....

Not exactly what you are looking for, but out will make reconnecting to the other router a bit easier.

im sorry i didnt pay closer attention to your first statement. im a cable guy so i deal with this stuff all the time and i got fixiated on one 65mbs and neglected your whole problem. so sorry.

lets start with the basics.
1. what brand and model of router?
2.how high is it placed?
3.how much higher is it than the highest object in that room?
4.is the router placed flat on a shelf or mounted vertically on a wall?
5.what are you walls made of, ie. plaster, stucko, drywall?
6.are the interior walls insolated?
7.do you have a metal roof?

all of these things have a great deal to do with your range. things to consider. often the wifi extender is missused. the extender can reduce overall performance of your intranet. wifi extenders are best used for distance NOT obstruction. if its the consturction of your house thats causeing the problem then a long range router and a high gain antenna are better suited to deal with the problem. and of course you do need to concider that your phone may be broke. my phone gets as good if not better wifi signal than my laptop. i use an app called tricorder(i got it because im a geek, but its acutally very useful). it has an excelent wifi scanner. i use it almost every day to place routers in peoples homes. you may also concider moving you net to a better location. hope this helps. if i can answer any more questions just ask.
