WiFi Tether on VZW GN - What Did I Just Stumble Upon?

I talked to a programmer who worked at Palm and HP who knows a lot about the programming behind the devices and he told me they would have to "cripple" the part of Linux that is allowing it to be used as a work around.

I highly doubt Google is going to allow Verizon to touch their OS, especially if you have a Nexus phone supported by Google.

BTW, way to go whoever actually called Verizon and ratted themselves out. What a MOR@n

So it may be safe to say that this is a permanant glitch within ICS? Seeing as how this has never been documented with any other device running Android up until the G Nex, it's possible we may see this same glitch once other phones begin receiving ICS.

Well good job Google... this is the best Ice Cream Sandwich I've ever had :D

I can't see Verizon strong arming Google into fixing the glitch because when it comes to programming changing 1 line of code means a trickle down effect that I doubt they are going to want to deal with. Also, knowing a few Googlers I wouldn't be surprised if they slipped this in for us on purpose.

What a freaking idiot. That person fits in the category of "better to keep mouth shut and just let us think your stupid, rather than speak and confirm it"

lol, what does it matter if someone says something to a Verizon employee or not? It's not like the people at Verizon don't know how to use the internet... in fact, I don't doubt that some of the frequent lurkers work for Verizon. This isn't exactly a secret forum.

I don't know about Verizon, but Best Buy used to offer free gift cards to anyone who
alert them to pricing mistakes on their website. Well, only the first person gets the
$25 gift card. They stopped this offer a year ago, so I assume they hired someone
full-time to surf internet forums.(such as Slickdeals.... :D ) Probably doesn't even
cost that much, if they hire someone in India. :(

In the case of "free" hotspotting, it is extremely easy for Verizon to see who's using
hotspotting without a subscription. For example, if you use your laptop/tablet and
connect to WiFi hotspot on you Galaxy Nexus, the request that sent over the network
will clearly identify it as from a laptop/tablet, NOT a smartphone.

Now that I think about it, when I bought my Verizon Samsung Droid Charge 4G
phone last year, Verizon Wireless allowed people to use hotspotting for free for
the first few months. It wouldn't surprise me that Verizon is doing the same thing
for Galaxy Nexus phone. Possibly even accidentally... but decided to let it
slide for a while... once we get so used to having Wi-Fi hotpost, a few of us are
bound to give in and subscribe, right? :)

I signed up with Verizon and bought the Galaxy Nexus just a few days ago. This "free" hotspot feature is a real nice bonus. I ditched my AT&T iPhone and ported my number to Verizon.

I just spoke with a Verizon Wireless tech support and asked about this issue. I had to call anyway because my ported number was unable to get incoming calls. When the ported number problem was resolved, I asked the rep about the hotspot app. c The first tech had no idea what I was talking about so she forwarded my call to a level 2(?) tech.

The rep said if I can access via hotspot without having to call Verizon and subscribe to it first, then it should be free. The rep told me he has the exact same phone! He followed my directions and downloaded the app to try it on his Galaxy Nexus. He said he got it work... but since he didn't have a laptop or tablet to try it on, he couldn't really do much.

Just to be sure, he searched my account again just to make sure I wasn't being charged the $30 hotspot fee. He talked with his supervisor to verify it. He said he left notes in my account about my call. If I somehow see the $30 charge on next month's bill, I can call back and have them remove the charge. :)

Some people are so naive its not even funny..

I installed Switch Pro Widget paid version and I can't figure out how to do this. Can someone please explain it to me? Thanks!

Put a widget on one of you screens and have the hotspot button be active on it.
How do I do that? I can get to widgets on my phone, but they are all widgets for specific things, like a direct call to a contact, but none are for the hotspot.

the switch pro widget should be in the list of widgets. You are close. After you installed the widget on one of your screen it should show you the options to have each switch on your screen or not inside the widget.I just checked and I see 4 different switchpro widget sizes that I can put on a screen.
touch and hold the widget and the rest will be obvious.

Seeing how we're not particularly good at getting updates they're probably not fixing this bug anytime soon.

I created a MHS widget and when I touch it, it activates the hotspot. But the only way to turn off the hotspot was for me either to turn WiFi on my phone or to go into settings and uncheck the hotspot box.

Is there any other way? It seems like it should be a toggle and let me tap it to turn on the hotspot and then tap again to turn off the hotspot. But it doesn't work that way for me.

Download Extended Controls in the Market. It has a hot spot toggle widget. That's what I'm using and I've had no problems.
