WiFi Troubleshooting

So now I have to download an app to fix an issue with the phone? That's a little ridiculous don't you think?

Everyone with WiFi issues, we need to report this to Motorola. Running an app to fix a fundamental flaw with the phone is INSANE!!!!!

No you don't have to download anything but why would anyone want to beat their head against a wall when they could put a pillow in place for some cushion until Motorola or Vzw finds a fix. I agree we all spent a lot of money on a phone that should work but there is always bugs with anything brand new out and over time they will get them worked out (fingers crossed)

Bingo. If you don't like working through bugs, wait 3 months before you get yours.

IMHO the problem is 2 fold:

1) I got my DX on Friday after it launched. 3 Months from now I will be locked into this phone and Verizon for another 2 years. I want it to be right out of the gate. I've been around IT long enough that you don't wait for bugs to be worked out. Many times they are forgotten about or just brushed under the rug.

2) I've never owned a phone that needed time to "work out the bugs". I bought my iPhone 3G 3 days after it came out. Worked perfectly out of the box. My wife, same with her 3GS.

I'm really torn with this one - I love the prospects of what it can do but it's the little things that get me down.

I have tried everything to get my Droid X to connect to my home wireless network. I am so frustrated.

We have a Linksys WRT54GS rev 1.0 running firmware v 4.71.4 - which is the last FW version that can be safely loaded on this hardware revision. I have turned off the encryption, publish SSID, taken it out of mixed mode - trying both B and G only. Every single time, I can connect to the network and get an internal IP address. However whenever I try to run any app that requires data it just hangs.

Just to make sure that the phone works, I took it to my in-laws house and connected it to their D-LINK DIR-685 and it worked just fine. It has to be that it isn't communicating with my router that has done just fine for me over the past 6 years. I don't have any N devices - so up until this point I haven't seen a need to upgrade. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that buying a phone would cause me to want to buy a new router....

Should I be patient and see if Motorola fixes this or just spend the $$ to upgrade.

After a ton of tinkering with it, I have identified that my issue is a DNS problem. When connected I am able to hit outside websites if I put in an IP address - but it doesn't work when I put in the domain name. No matter how I configure the router, I can't get the DNS to work on the WRT54GS.

I did get a hold of a WRT54G2 from a friend that upgraded to an N router. When I configured this router, I got the exact same issue. On a lark, I changed the DNS servers on the router to use the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) instead of my ISP's DNS servers. After a reboot of the WRT54G2, I was able get the the Droid X up and running. For some reason, when configured using my ISP's DNS servers, the DHCP server on the router does not pass the DNS server addresses down to the Droid X.

What is most puzzling to me is that I went back to the WRT54GS and tried the exact same configuration that worked on the G2. However, the DHCP addresses would not get passed down on that router even when using the Google DNS addresses. Anyhow, I am done tinkering with it for a while. The Droid X is up and running on WiFi using the following settings.

Router: Cisco-Linksys WRT54G2
Network Mode: G only
Broadcast SSID: Enabled
Security Mode: WPA Personal
WPA Algorithm: TKIP

Hopefully this will help others figure out their issue. If anyone has any idea why the router isn't passing on the DNS server address via DHCP - I'm all ears.

RangePlus Wireless Router (WRT100)
Firmware Version: 1.0.07

Droid X results with the following security settings:
Open (disabled): successful
WPA Personal, TKIP shared key: successful
WPA2 Personal, TKIP shared key: successful
WPA/WPA2 Personal, TKIP shared key: successful
WPA/WPA2 Personal, AES shared key: successful

Noticed that get better lock if set to Wireless N setting on router instead of B,G and N compatible setting...

NOTE:
Also notice a trick to take away wifi delay once activating and inquiring ip connection: After triggering wifi on device, press the power button to put to sleep and then wake device back up and lock is instant.. Strange, but seems to work every time for me.

That's a surprise because I know a number of techs that had nothing but issues with iphone 2g and 3g, and I have a customer that having issues with the 3gs. The phone had bugs also because that was why a update came out a few weeks after all of them came out... The iphone isn't perfect and it is no different than any new device...

I believe the main issue is because the Droid x is using a wireless N configuration that isn't commonly used like B and G and configuring isnt as cut and dry.. I believe they wil get it going with a soon update.

Netgear WNR2000

I'm trying to download the firmware update file for this router to fix the problem, and Netgear's website won't let me have it. So frustrating. I hope this isn't against the rules, but does anyone here have that file? When I try to download it from Netgear's website, it asks for a login and password. It doesn't ordinarily ask for that.

Any help would be much appreciated. :D

PS. Would send a link to Netgear's download page, but I think that might be against the forum rules. I wouldn't know... I didn't read them.

I have the WNR2000-V1.2.3.7NA update saved to my hard drive if you want to give me your e-mail I will be glad to send it to you

Missing the point

All of these posts directing you to change this or that on your router miss the point: you shouldn't have to do that. It should just work. And from what I can gather from other forums, this problem didn't just surface with the Droid X. The original Motorola Droid has them, too, and as far as I can tell, Motorola has done nothing to address them. Point two: even if I fix it so I can use it with my home router, I still can't use it with most public networks. I love everything else about this phone, but if I can't use of for basic work functions, I can't use it.

Right on the money!

I encourage everyone with this problem to post about it here in the Motorola forums There is at least one 84 page thread for the original Driod and it's WiFi problems so I'm starting to wonder if they'll ever even tell us they're working on a fix.

I am router stupid. I ordered a x a week ago and just waiting for it. I currently have a droid. I have read all the posts in this thread and I could not figure out if there is one or two routers that work with the droid x out of the box? Thanks.

First post at Android Central....so I hope I'm not reposting old info.

I have a Netgear WNR2000 have been frustrated as all get out with my X's wifi connection speeds. The ipod touches in the house are pulling pages faster then my X. AND the X was pulling info faster with it's 3G connection than on wifi!!!:(

I read through this thread and didn't find anything that really helped. Did a little googling and found this post over at Motorola Owners forum .

Guess what? It was spot on...the X is flying on the wifi at home.

Here's what I can tell about my set up:

Router: NETGEAR WNR2000
Security: WPA-PSK (TKIP) + WPA2-PSK (AES)
Mode: up to 300 (defined in the router info as - Up to 300 Mbps - Performance Mode - Maximum Wireless-N speed up to 300 Mbps. ) I might drop this back the "up to 145Mbps" because I think the wifi adapter on our XBox won't connect.
MAC address filtering: Not exactly sure how this is done on this router, but in the LAN settings, I have reserved IP's for all the wifi devices we use.

Went to the X's Wifi advanced settings and chose "Use static IP" with the following settings:

IP address: 192.168.1.x (IP address I reserved for the X)
Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (as listed in Appendix A of the WNR2000 Manual)
Netmask: 255.255.255.0 (as listed in Appendix A of the WNR2000 Manual)
DNS1: set to what's listed on "Basic Settings" page when you log into the router
DNS2: set to what's listed on "Basic Settings" page when you log into the router

Using speedtest dot net's app: It's consistently 5.3 Mbps down and .60Mbps up with pings about 50ms (before was 999ms). And most importantly the X loads pages over the wifi faster than the ipod touches now. :D

Hope this helps...I know I'm pleased, as the X's wifi performance now what I expected in the first place.

Oh one last thing...if I'm at home and just want to access the web and don't want phone calls, I'll turn on the airplane mode then re-enable just the wifi to surf the web, seeing VZ didn't seem to give us a widget to toggle off the cell/3G radio.

Ive also had trouble with wifi. My droid x would connect fine, but would drop connection almost ever time the droid tried to use the internet for something. I kept having problem until I set up a static IP like above poster. It seems pretty stable now with a static IP

Router: WNR3500
Security: WEP(Will try WPA later)
mode: up to 145 (ive got a WII and xbox using wireless and they were working at this mode)
No mac adddress filtering

I now have to believe my slow wifi performance is only at home with my NETGEAR router . I'm at a BW3's right now and the wifi performance is double what it is at home.

Just switch your security settings to wpa and tkip. My internet is screaming fast with this setup. Still on b/g/n mixed setting as well!!!

For those of you who are satisfied with a static IP - how could you be? What do you do when not at your house? The 3G coverage in my area is horrendous at best so I have to use wifi in my house. However, when I'm out and in a wifi spot I would much rather use that (example - my office). Why should I have to change my router to make this work and then turn around and ask Starbucks to change their router and then Barnes n Noble to change theirs? My iTouch has NEVER had a connectivity issue. Do we really think this is a software issue? I work with two people who have DXs and they work perfectly at home and at work. Mine doesn't work at work sitting right next to theirs. I say it doesn't work - I'm mean it holds a connection for a few seconds / minutes and then closes. Theirs is rock solid the entire time. I debate a software issue and if so I serious doubt Motorola will fix it any time soon.

Linksys E2000

1.0.01 firmware
WPA MIXED MODE
MAC filtering disabled
SSID broadcast enabled

My X will not connect unless I enable SSID broadcast - which I'd rather not do since this is in an office environment - but for now I'll allow it.

I'd love to hear any reports from other Linksys users who can connect with SSID Broadcast disabled and how you accomplished it.

The E2000 replaced a Linksys WRT54GS running in AP mode (with SSID disabled and WEP). Every time my X connected it caused my Linksys BEFSR81 8 port wired router to drop the internet connection - no matter how I changed the settings on the WRT54GS.

Obviously this wasn't acceptable since rebooting the BEFSR81 also meant rebooting the entire network - which made my staff want to lynch me 4-5x per day. So now I have the Linksys/Cisco E2000 with a Linksys/Cisco 8 port 10/100/1000 switch - hopefully this solution will work. At least now if the internet goes down - I don't lose my entire network on a reboot.
