Will a display work with scratches?

Out of curiosity - will a phone display with scratches work and will this affect the sensitivity of the touch or damage it fatally? Speaking strictly about Gorilla Glass 4.

Also, not asking about recommendations for screen protectors or whether I should put one. Simply asking about functionality of a display while scratched.

Yes, it will still function as it normally would without a crack or scratch, but if that scratch grows and widens, then it may cause issues for your device.
