Will AT&T version running KK allow either hotspot or USB tethering?

Hi,

I'm looking to replace my phone with an S5 on an MVNO using AT&T's network in the US. My current phone allows wifi hotspot which I use a couple of times a day at work.

Does anyone know if the S5 model G900A (AT&T variant) can be used for hotspot or USB tethering without rooting? Or does Foxfi work on this model with KK?

Or does anyone know much about the G900M which seems to be more prevalent in South America? From what I've read, its firmware is less restrictive, but I'm not certain how well it will work in the US or if it will have a valid warranty.

Any help is appreciated.

Tethering via cable or bluetooth both work on KitKat on AT&T via your cell data connection, assuming you are authorized.

Well, as I understand it, tethering is not permitted but not really enforced. My old international version unlocked phone allows wifi hotspot, so I'm not sure if that's determined by the OS, firmware, SIM card, or something else. I'd really like to keep the tethering without having to root. My old phone, however, is ailing, so I'll have to do something soon. May just have to bite the bullet and then root if necessary. Thanks.

Not sure what your issue is. I tether with my AT&T Galaxy S5 often. I tether both of my tablets and occasionally mt Toshiba laptop. I have the AT&T family share plan with 15 gig.

I believe if you're on the 15 gigs or higher data sharing, tethering is available to you at no cost. I'm with att on a 30 gig plan and I tethered with our iPad every now and again.

I'm on an MVNO that leases through AT&T. From what I'm seeing in various forums, the AT&T firmware locks out tethering/hotspot use for MVNO users, but those running Jelly Bean on a G500A can use the Foxfi app to accomplish this; however, when some G500A users upgrade to KitKat, they lose hotspot ability. I'm wondering if anyone here has used Foxfi with KitKat successfully on a G500A.
