Will flashing a ROM or using another kernel improve battery life?

I currently use the stock ROM with baconbits kernel and am not satisfied with my battery life. I just want the ability to overclock my phone and root access, which is why I haven't bothered with any ROMs. Would trying out one of the CM7 nightlies or another kernel improve my battery life? Im in the process of calibrating my phone at the moment (the recovery menu powered up the phone so i had to remove the battery, hope that didn't ruin the process) so tomorrow hopefully I'll have better battery life/more accurate reading, but if not I want to pinpoint the drain as I have followed every trick in the book on battery conservation.

What's your battery life like now? As far as rom/kernel combos you would really need to either try it and find out or read the thread for the ROM and see what people are saying about it.

I can say the CM7 nightlies have amazing battery life. The virtuous roms have some pretty good battery life but it seems that the cm6 and cm7 have some extra optimization that gives it a little extra. Highly recommend trying it out.

Number one battery saver, turn off auto brightness and set it low. As for roms, I imagine that anything with a gingerbread base may have some better battery optimization.

I have tried both CM 6.1.2 and 7, both of which have better battery life than stock Rom. In my opinion, it is a very noticeable difference, stock giving me 6ish hours before needing to be topped off and the CM Roms giving 12ish hours before getting to 20-30%.

I just had to reboot my phone because the 3g/hspa+ antenna wasn't starting back up after turning off airplane mode. I hope CM7 fixes annoying bugs like that. As far. As my battery life is concerned... I unplugged at 7am this morning with bluetooth on almost all day, wifi for 2 and a half hours, 15 minutes of angry birds and 30 minutes of internet browsing and I'm at 51%..I did clear my battery stats last night and lower my overclock to 1.1ghz max and switch to a conservative governor.

So that would be about 14 hours of battery life. That's not terrible. If you were on wifi longer it would be better, but that's uncontrollable. Also bluetooth being on the whole time could make a difference, but again if it's something you use you can't control that.

Do you have profiles set up in setCPU? Mainly for screen off and battery temp?

I have a myTouch 4G and I can run my battery dead in 5 hours if I try. Otherwise I can make it through a fairly long day without needing to plug in.
