You can install OTA (Over The Air) updates, like official Froyo EC05, if your phone:
1) is stock
2) is rooted
3) has 3rd party Market apps installed
4) has a custom kernel

You cannot install OTA updates if your phone:
1) has any system apps removed (note: even when restoring the removed apps via Titanium Backup or similar, people have still reported being unable to update)
2) has a custom ROM
3) has leaked or unofficial operating system software installed (e.g. Froyo DJ27, Froyo DK28, etc.)

If you fall under the second list above but still want to get the OTA update:
Go to this thread and flash back to stock.

But the real question is, why update OTA? I personally have never updated OTA, I always update manually. There are two benefits to this: you will get the update faster if you install it manually, rather than waiting for the update notification on your phone, and there is less of a chance of getting a bad download on your computer than on your phone since on your computer you can verify the download with a MD5 checksum.

I or someone else will always post a manual version of any update that is compatible with modified phones. So no need to go through the hassle of flashing back to a completely stock state.

I am rooted with clockwork, and running stock DI18 but with the Phoenix kernel... have all bloatware still installed... I assume I could update OTA?

Past updates have only checked for apps and like files during installation - having a kernel and Clockwork should be fine.

DK28 to OTA Question

I know others have this question, and yes I have searched, but I'm running DK28 and want to revert to new DL11 OTA coming out.

So I know the OTA will not work and will Odin back to DK18 for update. My question is how will I know when this is rolled to my phone? Will it show update available and just won't load/install?

Is that all I need to do? Go back to DK 18? If I root that, will it carry over to new upgrade, or will I need to do root again.

I would like to keep 2.2 until then, meaning some rooted apps I use.

I know many others will have this question - its been discussed but as root methods changed, so have answers. And now it looks like we are close to a need to know.

No need to worry about waiting for the ota. Once it is out you can bet that android central will have an article about it and how to do a manual upgrade, which is way easy and u won't have to wait for your phone to receive it. More than likely if you revert back to DI18 you will lose root so you will have to root again. When you upgrade to the officail froyo you will more than likely lose root but have no fear the dev community will have it re-rooted in no time if for some reason the methods we have now that gain us rot no longer work.

Also I hope u use a backup app tp back up your apps and app data so you can have those all on the new froyo build.

Oh and just found out the ota will only work for those on DI18. No word if sprint is going to release an ota to allow upgrading from DK28. I would just odin back to DI18 and upgrade that way.

Ragnorokx,
Thanks for moving this to someplace with answers. I knew I wouldn't be the first or last to ask, and I thought that was the answer.

I will be traveling with Wireless Tether fired up, so want to use that but won't have access to everything in case my phone stalls out with updates flying. This happened one year on Christmas vacation, updated New Year's Eve, bad updates, lost everything and when you are on vacation, you don't have backup files/computers with you, that is why its called vacation!!

So trying to be preventative and prepared so same thing doesn't happen. I'm still considering rolling back to DK18, not happy with battery usage - have tried playing with CPU Tuner and can't tell if that makes it even worse. Might have to roll back anyway if I can't get this to perform better, DK28 is worse for me.

Keep in mind not everyone gets the update at once. If you do go back to Eclair to get the update, you may be waiting days, a week, or longer before a notification pops up.

As for back-ups, since you mentioned Wireless Tether I'm assuming you're rooted. If so I recommend MyBackup Pro - it will backup your apps, app data, SMS, contacts, and much more all on your SD card. This will make for an easy restore in case anything goes wrong during the upgrade (or if you wisely choose to wipe before upgrading).

Also don't expect a huge battery improvement from DK28 - the official build is only one or two builds after DK28, and it may take another update or two like we had for Eclair to get battery life improvements.

NEEEWWB question

Hello everyone. Thank you for all your pointed information..

MYquestions is im running stock rom rooted with sprint bloatware deleted.

how do i prep myself for the upcoming OTA 2.2 update on the 26th??

or should i wait for someone to post the update.zip and flash it with odin? thanks im a newb to android but a tech savy geek

Thanx to ragnarokx for all your info.
I will be watching this thread for an update telling us how to get the new file to download and manually update from DK18. I've had a few issues with DK18 but nothing that would make up move backward. But would be happy to be "Official" again.

Im loving the DK28 update. It was easy to install. Im really not looking forward to the hastle of going back to 2.1 just to recieve the OTA update from sprint once Froyo goes officially live. It nice to know there will be a way to manually update.

@skyward

You posted in the correct thread, but I've moved your post to this thread to help contribute to the new FAQ thread. Head over there for your answer. Sorry for making you bounce between threads!

This does not seem to apply to PRL updates, am I correct? I've been running TER and I seem to have the absolutely newest PRL.

Will DG17 Prevent Froyo?

I previusly asked this Q a while back on xda, before I had discovered this fine forum. I know enough about android to survive but not much about the EPIC as I have the EVO, my girlfriend has the EPIC. The people on XDA said to use ODIN, and then more or less stopped helping at all.

So, I turn to you guys/girls.

I looked at my gf/s epic and noticed she was on build version DG17, and from what I understand, this is old. I cannot find anything on the sprint website found here, so I took er to the sprint store for an update, and all these dolts kept saying is Froyo is not out yet, you need to wait, not listening to anything I was actually saying. After they began to listen they said she is literally stuck, SOL with the version she has until Froyo is released for her device, and that Sprint and Samsung have no updates for her device. Furthermore, whenever I check for an update on her device it always says it is up to date. So, after getting annoyed I came here for help.

I did read somewhere on xda that being on the older build version causes issues with future updates. If this is true, will she be able to get Froyo if it ever comes out, and is it a good idea to to the updates in between (S:D700.0.5S.DG27 8/30/2010, S:D700.05S.DI07 9/16/2010, S:D700.05S.DI18 9/30/2010, etc), and, if it is possible to manually update the Epic, how does one do it? Once the morons at the sprint store started listening they said There was nothing I can do but wait for Froyo, but I did not instill much trust in them.

I guess what I am looking for is for someone to help me update it, keeping in mind I am a novice.

Thanks,
Carl

I see two options:

  1. If she doesn't mind losing everything not pulled in from the cloud (contacts might be coming in via Google but game statuses, memos, and other stuff are not), do as XDA suggested and use ODIN to flash her phone up to the most recent Sprint supported revision (DI18, I believe).
  2. If you need to retain all settings but are willing to deal with the possibility of cruft here and there, search the forums for the locations of the "update.zip" files for each update between where you're at and where you want to be, and update the phone manually. In this procedure, you'll pop an update.zip onto the SD card (usually via USB) and then power on the phone using a special key sequence (which should be linked to any thread pointing you at an update.zip) that will allow you to install said update.
I'm sure others will provide more detail (well, I hope they will). I'm at work and shouldn't even be posting here right this second, and to provide you exact details, would have to search the forums for you (something, honestly, you should be able to do yourself now that I've given you a hint or two of what to look for).

If your GF's phone is multiple revisions behind, and trying to download updates OTA isn't working, then there's something wrong, and ODIN would probably be your best bet. You might get lucky if you use an update.zip to bump her a revision and then start getting the OTA update(s) you are lacking.

With it being multiple revisions behind and not getting OTA updates, you probably won't get Froyo when available. This wouldn't be strictly DG17's fault - she's not getting even DI18, so I'd be worried that she's not even getting the Sprint OTA updates.

Hey Carl,

I'll assume you want to update to the latest Sprint supported ROM that will not result in any data loss, or risk in data loss.

So, what you need to do is gradually update the phone from DG27 to DI07 to DI18.

Here's the steps to upgrade to DI07:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/sprint-epic-4g/35214-manually-update-your-phone-di07.html

Then you repeat the steps in the above link with update DI18. Here's the link to DI18:
DI18 update for Stock Roms Only - xda-developers

Please make sure to not be distracted while you follow the steps! This will ensure that you follow them properly. So.... here's the very 1st step before you begin.
1) Look at g/f
2) Tell her, "Honey, sweety, pumpkin pie, the center of my universe...."
3) "...I'm going to update your phone and it'll take about 30 minutes. It's super easy and super safe, but I just can't be distracted. So, don't take it the wrong way if I'm not communicating with you. I just want to make sure that your phone works very well so that when we're apart we can always communicate!
4)Tell her, "I love you," give her a hug, and a kiss.
5) Begin following the steps above.

If this only worked on my gf....when I try to mess with her fascinate she gets all booty hurt. You should see her reactions when she sees I am messing around with my phone. :D

I would cut through all the bull and simply
[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

Use the first procedure with Odin to restore the phone to stock Eclair 2.1 (DI18). This will leave your girlfriends phone on the most current official OS (Eclair 2.1 DI18) and she will be ready for the official Froyo EA17 (so they say) when it becomes available.

Ha thanks so much. I love your steps. I should clarify that she does not want to lose data nor sees this as necessary but I am semi familiar with the release issues on the epic. At any rate, How do I get from dg17 to dg27? The fools at the Sprint store said froyo would fix all when it is released but everything points to the contrary. Again, thanks so much. I am capable of searching but as I am very unfamiliar wuyh all the different versions of Samsung stuff, its a bit hard to guess.

Completely missed that it was DG17, and not DG27. I searched online, but couldn't find the update.zip file to get you to DG27.

Your options on:
1) Run the Market and if there are any updates to apps, install them, reboot, and then check for an update to DG17. One person said this worked.
2) Call Sprint and speak with a technical specialist. They should be able to issue a ticker to force/push the update to your phone.
3) Search people in forums who said have the update.zip for DG17 to DG27. I doubt there are any left, but worth a shot...
4) Stock upgrade to DI18. Stock essentially hard resets everything. If your g/f uses gmail as her e-mail account she wont really lose information, just configurations... Like her configuration for speed dial. The ringer on her phone, stuff like that. Everything on the SD card stays intact. hard reset only affects memory on the phone. She will have to redownload her Market Apps, but that information is stored in the Market, and when she first loads up the Market the Apps begin to download/update.

If you want to go with option #2, let me know and I can search the options and provide them.
