will people really shell out almost $1,000 for a Pixel XL with 128gb? ($947 after tax)

Google hasn't been known as a cheap option either other than 3 phones and 2 tablets. All of their other stuff has been priced normally in line with their peers - except the Pixel and Glass products, which have always been top of the line hardware at premium price points. With your car example, I'd consider Pixel the equivalent of the Rolls Royce, most of their products being BMW and with Nexus being more like mini. Same company, three brands, three different levels of expectations.

I don't like this analogy but guess it sorta works.

Agree... My 2013 LTE Pixel was like $1,500, my 2015 Pixel LS was $1,300 and I was one of the maroons that paid $1500 for Google Glass... Google stuff is not generally considered cheap..

Having had several of the higher priced options from Google I can say without a doubt that they are pure quality! Hands down top notch!

Google pumped out a few cheap phones and now everyone expects an $800 phone for $47.99 with free shipping, When they don't get, holy cow-a-bunga~!

Where does this mentality come from though? Most Google stuff is not cheaply made and is not considered cheap price wise...

We've been trained that Google phones were the good affordable option... This is a change in their methodology. I am on the BMW forums but I knew what I was into when I bought a BMW so I had my expectation set, BMW was never known as an affordable car in my life time.

It's funny tho. I would get the crying if they prices a nexus at this point. It would be unjustified. Pixel devices are premium priced devices! Maybe people aren't familiar with pixel and don't realize that?

According to Ebay, I can get $400 for my 6P...so my XL 128gb Pixel with free Daydream headset doesn't sting very much!

I think this is certainly the case. Also we are unwilling to accept it. I mean I've been waiting for years for a phone that I really wanted and no one has delivered. To be fair, only Apple or Google directly can do it right now since they are the only ones that update their phones.

I know of the Pixel chromebooks which are devices that I'd never consider and I've written them off, they don't fit the use-cases for my life and I've ignored them. Pixel is NOT known by people outside the tech crowd. And even on some other forums someone posted an iPhone vs Pixel thread and there were people responding that they had no clue what it was. I suppose that is part of why Google is spending so much on marketing but this was last night and I would have thought anyone that is online would have seen a post on news or social media, otherwise seen an ad, I mean google has an ad right on their search page...

We use to all pay 40 a month per phone even if we owned it. Since they switched to discounted lines I don't see it as that big an expense considering how much I use it. I am not an organized person. Very forgetful. I lean on my phone all day. I went without another Internet device while just getting my n7 (not by choice) and although I was glad to get this crappie tab a, I began to enjoy the inclusion doing everything on one device.

I am not sure the pixel xl will be worth it, at this point I have a terrible track record. You all should run away from any of my selections. My favorite 2 phones ever are the palm pre and the n7, I owner the TouchPad as well. Webos was by far the best os I have ever used. Still seeing things hyped that I had on those devices. I got the pre in 2009. The note7 was the first phone I got pre-ordered or even close to release. It's still the best phone I have ever had. The pixel xl has big shoes to fill.

BTW I also owned the s3, s5 and lgg4. All suffered fatal ends. Motherboard, battery drains, software glitches, and then my perfect n7.

Yes I could have gone other ways. IPhone? Been using my wife's old 5s since shutting the n7 down. I am not impressed. Yes it is better at some things. I am not putting it thru all the paces because it's small and we'll I have had enough for a while. I am using it basically as a phone with email and messaging. More then good to that.
S7e, s7? I had the s7e experience during the battery loaner days and we'll it's a dumbed down n7. It would have been fine if I wasn't always comparing it to the n7. The s7 is even less so, so no way.

I am better the HTC 10 will be much like the pixel. But without the full backing of Google. Lgv20 does not seen worth it and considering I am leaving a bad LG, that wasn't that good before it went bad. Nope.

I should have considered the note 5 more. Not sure how close that one is to n7 and I could still use the gear vr.

So it is the pixel I am choosing, well actually the pixel xl 128. If I hadn't already had the $36 payment for the n7 maybe I would have conceded the pixel 32. I also figure I needed the extra space even with free photo storage. If I am on vacation or away from wifi I don't want to run out of room or minimize recording options. And after using the 5.7 everything else seems to small.

So after all that, yes I am in. Looking forward to other integrations like wifi and home, in addition to the vr. Oh and also chromecast.

Definitely a higher-than-expected price, but it will come down within months, I believe. I think most people are price-comparing with the Nexus line

tax aint gonna be $350.... people dont think twice about smoking a pack of cigarettes a day or 2 starbucks coffees but a $1000 phone that will last a minimum of 24 months is crazy ?

$42/month for 24 months = pixel. thats $1.40 / day.... less than one coffee/day and i use it god only knows how many times a day and i actually enjoy it and cant live without it (work)....easy for me to spend other peoples money but i just dont see the big deal.

$549 u can buy HTC 10 PLUS u can trade in a phone. Google should offer a trade up too

I don't include tax when considering the price of anything and why would you since everything is taxed...

not necessarily... it depends on the device, the seller and the location. :) When I bought my Nexus 6P, it was tax-free because I ordered it directly from B&H Photo and I didn't live in New York. Unfortunately, B&H Photo doesn't seem to carry the Pixel just yet. :(

Of course you follow all your local laws and report the purchase a pay applicable tax . . .;)

I have owned 4 different versions of the Note, including the Note 7.All through Verizon. I decided to get a refund for my 7 and apply that towards the Pixel XL rather than go back to a Note 5.

For what its worth. with Ebates, i can get $75 back on the purchase of this phone it seems.

Purchasing this phone right now is a mistake imo. Google no doubt is listening to all of the feedback from places like this forum and other dedicated android groups and hear the overall consensus that the pixel is priced to high. I predict a $100 to $200 price drop in time for black friday or cyber monday in order to push more sales in time for the holiday season.
