will people really shell out almost $1,000 for a Pixel XL with 128gb? ($947 after tax)

IMHO very few Apple people will switch to a Pixel, but I can see Samsung people giving it a hard look, except for those wedded to T-Mo or AT&T. Giving Verizon an exclusive seems very short sighted to me. No matter how much you lust after a Pixel if you already have a family plan on AT&T or T-Mo there will be huge momentum to overcome to switch to Verizon, and for many that is a total deal breaker. For myself the availability on Project fi makes the Pixel much more interesting, but fi is still a tiny niche service.

If you convince everyone that $1000 is the norm by having every major phone manufacturer charge $1000 for phones, then people will believe that that's the norm and think that it must be worth that much.

How long until a mid range phone is $1000 from OnePlus or ZTE and the so called "Flagship" is $2000 or higher? No sarcasm here.

Where is Google going with the Pixel?

EDIT: original post moved and is completely out of context in this thread.

If you consider the price of the Daydream VR Headset, that's almost 100$ (after taxes) that you get for free... Now the question is "Will you use the VR Headset?"

I too can manage with just 32 GB of storage. I'm not an app hound and don't load up my phone with videos and music.
Justifying the Pixel's cost is difficult. I have a Nexus 5X and I'm happy with it but I paid less than half the cost of the 32 GB Pixel. I do love the pure Android experience.

I'd used it, maybe not every day, but it's pretty good experience. It's definitely part of our entertainment.

Is the premium pricing justified?

It's priced @ $850 for the Pixel as against $650 in the US - can you decode the $200 jump?

Re: Where is Google going with the Pixel?

From first hearing about these phone my main thought was "Google is pulling an apple", then the thought"is that a bad thing?" . The main criticism android gets is fragmentation, so maybe this is Google trying to say This is android and how it should be. But i do agree I'm not a fan of the phone's looks , I would have preferred all aluminium back. This just looks like an HTC 10 with a glass part glued on.

This is off contract pricing. No different than any other flagship off contract. You can still finance through Google... What am I missing?

I certainly wouldn't. Not with the benefit of cloud storage, especially with photos and videos having free and unlimited cloud storage.

Watched the launch and it looks great but too expensive and limited providers in Australia make it a hard buy. Going to most likely skip it and either stick with my Note 4 - custom rom or buy the Note 7

that sounds a little insane to me...

Holy **** that's quite a price. I didn't expect it to hike that much - thanks for the info. Even if I were in need of a phone now, I'd seriously do a double take. That's considering my excitement. That's like...over-iPhone-expensive.

$1300 with Tax for the 128GB XL blows away any amount i have paid for a phone last year got close to $1000 for the 6p 64GB but that was with nexus protect. This time it was either the extra GB or the protection. Selling my phone and iPad to help with the cost.

If my carrier can give me a deal on a plan I may cancel the pre-order and go on contract, something I haven't done since my last one expired 2 years ago.
