Will the Defy work on AT&T?

Well, I was all set to switch from AT&T to T-mobile (and the Defy). And then the news broke that T-Mo sold out to AT&T! There's a glimmer of hope that the gov't might block the deal, but I'm not counting on it.

So my question is, would the Defy still work when AT&T takes over T-Mo's towers? Or will I have to buy a new handset?

Anyone know?

Cheers,

Unlocked Defy Available

Brian,

There is an unlocked version of the Defy available that will work (better) on AT&T's network as it has AT&T's 3G frequency. The Defy available through T-Mobile will work with an AT&T SIM card, but you will only get 2G connectivity. Should you be interested in acquiring one of the unlocked Defys, you can find them here:

Motorola DEFY Android Smartphone (Unlocked) #MB525 - Expansys USA

or on EBay. If you buy off of EBay, make sure it is a truly unlocked version and not a T-Mobile version someone is trying to pass off as unlocked. I am with T-Mobile, have the Defy, and I absolutely LOVE it!!! Feel free to write if you have any questions about it!!!

Thanks, Boone. Glad to hear you like the Defy. The reviews seem to be mixed.

Anyway, I'll probably just sign up with T-Mobile. It'll take a year to get the AT&T deal approved, and hopefully at least a few months after that for AT&T to assimilate all the towers. Most of my data consumption will probably be through WiFi anyway. I'm not much of a data hog.

It'll be a nice little device for a couple of years.

Brian,

If you do get the Defy, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction for some amazing accessories and applications.

I am interested in buying a DEFY for use on AT&T. Any other places that sell the unlocked phone?

what about this one? defy - Cellhut Search Result

If I buy the DEFY will I be able to download the update to Android? In other words if you go to "update" where will the update come from? It can't come from T-Mobile since i am not their customer (but they are the ones that I read that had the update from 2.1 to 2.2)

What about warranty service? Do I ship it back to Motorola for warranty repair or am I out of luck if it breaks?

Thanks

In regards to your Android update, I have a Defy that's locked to T-Mobile (I'm an AT&T user). I was able to update my software through my Wi-Fi connection without even having a sim card installed. I really like the Defy, I also have a DroidX. They are very similar but the X is a much larger screen. I've been looking for a way to unlock my Defy so I can use my AT&T sim card, but have had no luck.

I have a Tmob Defy I rooted. When I moved, I had to switch to ATT. Tmob gave me the unlock code. To my surprise,,, and I kid u not,,,, I get the ATT 3G network. I know it sounds impossible cuz of the different frequencies... but I am herring it. I can even toggle to Edge and use it if I want. Unreal.
