Possible phones of the year IMO:
Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge
iPhone 6S / 6S Plus
Nexus 6 2015 (new version won't be called 7)
Moto X 2015
LG G4
One Plus Two
Problem picking one now is only one has been released and one other announced.
In some cases but not all. The A8 was ahead of any chip at its time, and they were the first to go 64 bit in mass production. Also no stores gave a crap about mobile payments until Apple Pay went live.I know, point being that the Iphone is so far behind the times. They put out a new device and a comparable android one was out 3 years ago.
Samsung just made the semi finals. So far they've knocked the M9 and just now the Z4 out of the running for best phone overall. Looks like this year's finals will be S6 vs G4 vs iPhone 6S (can't really include the Note 5 because it's the same company and also a phablet)
I may have to add another device to that list

Trying to call the "phone of the year" semi finals in April is like declaring January 2nd the "hottest day of the year" so far (in the northern hemisphere). There are so many devices that haven't been released yet, it'd be remarkable if the S6 was even in the top 5 at the end of the year, let alone a realistic contender for top of the heap.
If I had said "finals" instead, I could easily see your point. IMO the S6 has knocked out one of their biggest competitors, HTC. So among the "popular" flagships who does that leave? Moto, Sony, LG, and perhaps nexus, although that one doesn't really take off with the general public like the aforementioned. There's a lot of other brands of course, but they don't hit the popular categopry like the ones I just listed. This forum's main page list of phone manufacturers also reflects that.
Ok, I didn't realize you were talking about sales or popularity - for some reason I assumed we were talking about the best of devices. We're just speaking to two different questions, popularity vs quality, etc.
That's a whole new thread on its own (the debate on whether or not sales is an indicator of quality). I don't believe they're mutually exclusive though.
