Will the RAZR's sealed battery stop you from buying?

Has the sealed battery stopped you from getting the RAZR

One pet peeve of mine is build quality. I hate phones that creak and squeak when you handle them. My Incredible 2 right now does that on the top left of the phone. Luckily I don't handle that part of the phone often, but that's always the weak point in phones. The battery cover. By sealing the entire thing, we should have a REALLY nicely built device that is solid as a rock. I can't wait.

I know what u mean. Og Droid had that problem where the cover would easily come off. One piece of clear scotch tape fixed that. Nut come one tape? To fix something which was supposed to be the best Android for its time? And on my tbolt, the bottomed left (screen facing me) its loose, to where if it falls a small distance, the battery cover and maybe the battery also fall out.

Great point.

I've had the OG Droid since release day and I've never had any build quality problems. It's been a solid rock and I've even dropped it a few times in the nearly 2 years I've had it and only a few small scratches and dings are to show for it. It handles wear and tear VERY well. That's what I like about Motorola. People will bash Moto on here but I think they've always build solid phones. There is no wiggle room in their construction and it always feels like you've got some solid hardware in you're hands.

I've been going back and forth between the RAZR and Nexus because the sealed battery was scaring me but I'm still going with the RAZR because I like having the SD card slot and I'm going to trust that Motorola has engineered the sealed battery well and I'm trusting there won't be any problems.

It seems likely that during the 2 year contract the battery will have to be replaced. Only so many charge cycles per battery before it's unable to hold a useful charge... What will replacing that battery cost? Will DIY kits exist by the time the battery has lived it's useful life?

Most these batteries are rated to 5,000 - 10,000 charge cycles. If you charge it twice per day, every day for two years that's under 1,500 cycles.

Pretty sure I haven't had a phone longer than 6 months anyway (og droid and the droid x lasted the longest at 7 and 6 months respectively) so I'm definitely not worried about charge cycles. That's for the guy or girl that buys it on eBay after I'm sick of it. Lol.

i have an og droid and only had to exchange it once. i am still on the original battery.......what the hell are you guys doing to these phones that you need new batteries??

So form before functionality is the new norm with this trend toward thinner and thinner phones.

If they keep this up, I might have to go back to dumbphones.

what was sacrificed as far as functionality?

Yeah maybe until it dies, but that figure says nothing about degradation vs charge cycle.

+ the fact that is has a hardware trip to reboot it incase of a lockup..

Really people shouldnt be so worried.. cant count how many people said the locked battery was a deal breaker.. same people that didnt view no SD card as a deal breaker.

Its amazing what some people are able to talk themselves into believing.

I've never seen numbers this high. From what I've read around 4500 to 5000 would be the max amount of charge cycles it would take to reach 70% capacity which is considered by many to be the end of a battery's life. This high amount of cycles would be possible only by discharging the battery about 10% which seems completely impractical for any user.

I'd still consider it if real-world usage proves good, but it's not ideal to me. I have a long commute by train each day, and I'm a heavy user of my Droid, so if I forget to charge it mid-day, I suspect I'll be out of power well before I get home. Still, if people are having good experiences with it after trying it for a while, then I'm in.
