For 5 hours my older laptop pc is stuck at 35% complete.

Is it safe to shut diwn?

I still use this 10+ year old Lenovo laptop as my main computer using a 20 inch monitor.

I do have a (for me) decent 2 year old desktop I still only use mainly for storage and streaming on my old plasma TV.

TIA.

Ugh. Is the "working" circle of dots still moving, or is that frozen as well?
Thanks. They still keep on moving the whole time. Shame if I lost it, I never really transformed over, although I'm not too worried about files as they're mostly covered. It's just the set up.

I'll leave it overnight now. It can overheat and shut down if I double up on You Tube screens (dust removal due really) but it has stayed cool this whole time since starting up earlier.

It only has a 15 minute battery so it's plugged in all the time.

Update the story tomorrow, and some gentle research by me. :)

In my experience, when this kind of thing happens, a forced shutdown and reboot typically work fine, with no loss of data. So if it's still doing that in the morning, force a shutdown by pressing and holding Power for a good 15 seconds (or pull the battery), and then try restarting.

So I left it running for another 12 hours still showing 35%, and then forced it off. (as I would normally do when it occasionally seized from overheating - always with the Windows 10 rotating logo Screensaver showing).

I tried to blew out any (invisible) dust, turned it off for an hour and when restarted it immediately showed Updating @100%.

When I went back to it again some 10 minutes ago it had changed slightly to Cleaning Up 100 % Complete.

I don't know how long it has been like that but there's obviously more cleaning than usual going on.

It's looking better at least. Thanks for the comments.

It has now finally finished the update and clean up 90 minutes after restarting from yesterday, when it showed Updating 100% rather than 35%.

Thanks for the reassurance it wasn't going to implode!
