Wireless Tethering for Root Users

i usually get .3-.6 Mbps on 3G and anywhere from 1 mbps - 4 mbps on 4G. I live in the st louis area, and results are obviously dependent on the quality of service in your area.

"Wireless Tether for Root Users" v2.0.6 is what I am using and it works fine.

Which version are you running Trevoreon?

This is the version I was using from the Market before I started using ROMs that had the same exact version loaded into it.

I was using the market version.
I'm now using the version eerongal posted and it made it so my desktop could connect.
The network still won't show up on other devices such as my PS3 or iPod, which to me, is curious.
However I've achieved what I needed and am thankful for the help that I got here.

well, ive never gotten that version from the market to work across three different epics. The one i posted is also "wireless tether for root", but its worked on every epic i've used (the other did the same thing Trevoreon's was doing), i found that version via these forums and bookmarked it. Curiously, this version that i found works also updates via the market, and has continued working after updating it (at least for me)

edit: just checked the version number, and mine appears to be the same version as yours. I dunno what the difference is, but i guess its one of those things to jot down and move on.

That is strange... The other day I had no Wireless Tether installed in my phone due to switching ROMs and I downloaded that same exact one from the Market and it worked for my Epic also a few others in the Rooting section for the Epic used the same too and it worked for them.

Oh well, not sure what the issue is there but thanks for the help on this post.

Thats what i get with 3g 4g i get about 3 to 4 down

Just tested my internet speed via wifi tethering:

1.03 Mbps down, 0.92 Mbps up

And via 4g on the phone's browser:

0.92 Mbps down, 0.98 Mbps up

I'm using the wireless tether app here.

Those are comparable numbers, but are those good numbers? Just curious what other people are getting and what I ought to expect.

Wireless Tether does not support infrastructure mode, meaning you can't tether your iPod or other mobile devices to your Epic. Wireless Tether only works in ad-hoc mode, which means you can only tether desktop/laptop computers.

If you want infrastructure mode, you need to either: 1) be on Eclair and use the MobileAP from i9000, or 2) pay for the Sprint Hotspot.

How do you install the .apk file for tethering?

Grab "Astro" from the Market.

- Find the file on your SD card and click on it

- Prompt will say Application file, click on Open App Manager

- Click the Install button.

Done.

I'm assuming you downloaded Wireless Tether from the Market. If so, that version does not work on the Epic. Use this version instead.

However, Wireless Tether does not support infrastructure mode, meaning you can't Tether your iPod to your Epic, only desktop/laptop computers. If you want to be able to tether your iPod to your Epic as well, you need the MobileAP from i9000. Good luck!

I clicked on that link and it said that file DL has been depacted (sp) is that a good file still?

just to be extra sure & (pardon the noobiness), I won't get extra fee's using these apps right? only if I used the Sprint Hotspot? Thanks!

Yes it will redirect you to a newer version.

im up and running but it seems like the connection isnt secure as i had to connect through wireless with the icon "Androidtether", can other people access this connection?

Wireless Tether, I think the name says it all.

Enable the Wireless WiFi encryption

Setup a new passphrase

Security - Enable Access-Control

Once connected to your laptop/desktop goto Access Control setting and enable and authorize your desktop/laptop

Secured, done.

Where do you enable Wireless WiFi encryption at?

And just to let you know I appreciate all the help you've given me.

Start the Wireless Tether application. Menu button>settings>

When I turn that on it tells me registration error my sprint data username or password is bad. Im using the .apk file to use tethering. If I use the app you gave me will it be seen by others or will I be the only one who can access it?

If you have the security settings enabled and change the pass phrase p/w then yes they still can see it but won't be able to connect.
