Wobbly power button...

Mine feel pretty secure--I do hear the rattling when I shake the device.

The white 16gb that showed up today has a loose power button and a solid volume button. I just RMA'd it. Google does offer cross shipping.

The 32gb will be here tomorrow so I'll see what happens with that phone.

FWIW.. I had this same problem with the Moto X and it was NOT by design on the Moto X to have loose buttons. My replacement was nice and tight.

Why would a wobbly button be "by design"?
Sounds more like people not wanting to accept the fact there's a manufacturing error with the product.

And it sounds to me like some people are looking for problems that aren't necessarily there. I'm not an apologist for Google but some folks obsess over the strangest things. The phone makes a subtle rattle when you shake it? Who cares? Do you shake your phone often?

As for the buttons, we'll find out soon enough if it's by design or not. On mine the power and volume buttons have a small amount of play if you wiggle them in a motion perpendicular to the screen surface. My Nexus 4 has the same play in the buttons but it's harder to sense because the edges of the buttons are rounded instead of square like on the Nexus 5. I'm not concerned but the phone does have a warranty if it becomes a problem.

Just put a case/bumper on it...problem solved, and your phone will handle the inevitable drop to the ground better.

Got my 32gb and the power button and volume buttons are all very solid. Unfortunately I can't activate it due to Sprint not having the 32gb ESN in their system...

EDIT: After careful examination, the power button does have the tiniest bit of play to it. I never would've even noticed if I wasn't specifically looking for it.

Just got my phone. Volume button is solid. some minimal play to the power button but nothing that drives me crazy to be honest. the sound of the screen rattling might just be from the same sim tray that you hear rattle when you shake the phone because once you tap the screen towards the bottom of the phone it goes away

I just checked my 32GB black unit, and it does have a bit of play (and by bit, I mean just a bit) on the volume rocker and the power button. I am not sure I am that concerned about it, to be candid, I don't even think I would of noticed if people didn't point it out? I mean what is the worry here? that eventually it'll cause issues and the buttons won't work?

How long is the warranty from the play store anyways or is this something that folks recommend returning immediately as it could be a larger issue? It didn't seem all that bad to me esp. since I'll have a case on the phone once I get it activated.

EDIT: I'll check my 16GB once I get it tomorrow

EDIT: I was just playing with the phone again, honestly, I dont even see how people noticed this in the first place... kinda makes me wonder if I ever would of noticed it if no one pointed it out cause it really isn't that bad. I'd still be curious to find out what the warranty is on the device though just so you can keep an eye on it.

Just not something I would look for either. I think people are just looking to much at it dissecting every little thing..

My volume rocker is loose enough to the point that it rattles any time I touch the upper half of the screen (on mine it is not the sim tray as others have suggested, it is very clearly coming from the volume rocker). I don't think this is a case of me looking for a flaw as it is very noticeable with just basic interaction with the touch screen.

as mentioned already my bower button is quite loose.
If you tap on the phone ore shake it you here the button rattling.

Anyway i think it will not be a problem with function but it is a bit of a quality issue.
I will not return the phone for that reason but might because of the Wifi issue i am having.
Wifi is not stable on my phone as soon i walk 10 meters away from my rooter the signal drops out to almost nothing.
No problem with my HTC one.

Well the top of my 32GB N5 definitely rattles with just a little movement or tapping. I THOUGHT it was the power button but "something inside" still rattles even when I gently hold the power button and tap the phone.
Oh well...doesn't really bother me but will monitor the threads to see if this might become a bigger problem as the phone ages?

put a good case on it and you'll never notice if it is anway! this case has molded cradled power button area -

i don't know how my power button is - it seemed fine to me but i threw a case on the phone 30 seconds after i got it and it seems fine.

I think you guys are all worrying about something that is very insignificant and minor. It appears to be made this way and is not a defect. Mine has a slight amount of play which is barely noticeable.

SHHHHHH... It will be okay... SHHHHHH

If anyone decides to replace their nexus with a new one from google, please let us all know if the new one also again has the same wobbly power button.

thanks

Mine is loose as well and not from shaking it.. I noticed it just picking the phone up from my desk and lifting it up to look at the screen and I heard a clicking sound each time so after a few pick ups I shook it and it is very clearly the power button that is wobbly.. it's loose and not snug like a bug in a rug... but at the same time I am not all that overly concerned about it... I ordered a case (as mentioned in other responses on here) and that should pretty much nip that in the bud quickly... as long as the power button doesn't short out and stop working... The rest of the phone is rock solid from spending the last 24 hours with it... I have no complaints....
