Good news! The Epic supports the same wifi chip as the Evo, which is capable of FM radio support!

Here's a link:
Outstanding Spec questions...

I have to thank some of the guys over at SDX for linking me. Even though there is no trace of it in the Epic system dump, it doesn't matter. If the hardware supports it, a hacker or even Samsung can implement it later!

I never got a single station both times I tried the FM radio on my epic (when I had one for 3 weeks). Does anyone else have better experiences or is this just a silly extra?

You used to have an Epic and for three weeks? I didn't think any were floating around that long ago.

wha? You had an Epic for 3 weeks? There's no software that even allows you to use the radio at the moment.

Betcha he's talking bout an Evo....

lol yuuuuuup. and I betcha he didn't have any headphones plugged in.

<sigh/></whine>What is this, assume frankos72 is and Idiot day? This is the 2nd post of mine that was replied to today where someone assumes I'm and idiot.</whine>

So, the app on the EVO won't work without them. It straight up says when you open the app, "You must plug in headphones to be used as an antenna." Then it wouldn't go any further until you did. So, yeah, I had headphone plugged in. :p

So, cr3amy, or anyone else, have you ever received a FM station clearly with your android device without having to hold your headphones cable up in the air? FWIW, I live in the suburbs of OKC, so there are plenty of strong signaled stations to choose from around here.

Supposedly, you have to try the open-air trick or whatever the heck it is (standing outside?). That gets a clear signal. My iPod Nano doesn't get very good reception inside either, but the outside reception is amazing! I was camping in the middle of a national park and I was getting stations clear as day. In the car? Static and somewhat of a signal.

Yeah, I was definitely assuming you're an idiot, lol. ;) And I didn't know that the app says it like that...

Suburbs typically don't have the best radio reception compared to the actual city, that might be part of it. Try a couple different pairs of headphones, too btw. I was just Googling it and some dude was whining that a pair of headphones he tried out didn't work as well as the buds that came with his walkman.

So were you trying earbuds or headphones? Did you try more than one pair?

I'd suggest the Beyerdynic T1 or the Sennheiser He-90? KIDDING! Good luck affording those. Headphones for me did not work as well as earphones by the way.

I wish Samsung would implement the FM in HD Radio rather than the old static ridden regular analog FM.

Even the Microsoft Zune media player has the static free digital FM HD Radio.

I mean what the difference between using the analog vs. HD radios...a few pennies in chip cost??

You make a good point, but marketing says that if you use analog radio, you can save up the HD radio for a later device and sell that for even more!:p

Just tried 1 pair. The are KOSS earbuds KE29E. Anyway, I have the buds that came with my Pre and it looks like there are some pretty sweet ones in the box of the Epic, so I guess I'll try those too.

As for reception in our area it's great. I'm in the burbs, but the neighborhood is a bunch of 1.5 to 2 acre lots in a fairly new edition so the houses are spread apart and there are few trees. I was actually outside mowing the lawn. (Maybe there was interference from the riding mower??) I usually listen to MP3s on my Pre, but since the EVO was new I didn't have any on there yet. Anyway, I eventually gave up and just listened to the hum of the mower.

Hmm, I just hope that the wifi chip had an issue in the Evos. I really would like to have some decent radio. I live in the middle of LA, so it might be even worse :( if it works like the Evo's radio does.

I know seriously. I can't even listen to KROQ anymore. My mom listens to KIIS FM. It's like "Noon time! Time to repeat all of our music! 5 O'clock! Time to repeat again..."
