Worried I'm Going To Screw This Up (Again, lol)

So in order to customize my Optimus S (VD), I should do the following and in this order?

1. Root - (GingerBreak?)
2. Custom Recovery - (Xionia?)
3. Kernel - (XioniaRedux?)
4. ROM - (CM7 recommended?)

Is this right or wrong? I'm a noob, I apologize but i do appreciate any help. Thanks!

That 2nd link really helped. Thank You. My question now is, when i tried to do that custom recovery before, i used the xionia 013 and my phone was finished. Only got to the LG screen upon booting and the recovery menu was the blank black screen. So my question is, which recovery should i use so this doesn't happen again?

Thanks so much for your help!

Use this recovery: Xionia CWMA v1.2518.6 Link below.

Make sure you read the whole post first before you do in the install. Follow directions IN ORDER

WHAT EVER YOU DO, DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER

Ok, wow...lol. Here's an absolutely stupid question probably, Is a kernel and custom recovery practically the same thing? I ask because that one sticky says both..."Recoveries, ROMS, Kernels, & Themes". Thanks basketthis! Your a gigantic help!
NO they are 2 completely different things!!! Custom recovery first! I would suggest just do your recovery first, dont worry about anything else until you do that first!

Xionia CWMA v1.2518.6 (custom recovery) Linked below!

Once you get that done then we can start looking at roms & Kernels

Ok, my bad on that. That's what i thought that they were different. It does say to extract the RAR file on to the sd, which i did last time. Then i got thru the whole putting the commands in, via terminal emulator. Then the problems arose.

Yeah i promise i won't use ROM Manager, lol. That's the same one i used last time and when i had the problems, so i'm not sure what to do. Thanks

Xionia CWMA v1.2518.6 (custom recovery) is the recovery that most of us use! So that is a great one, and comes with alot of knowlege of people to help!

Should i extract and have both the original zip and the extract and the .img file on the root of the sd card?

Use the links I have provided. You will be fine just follow all the instructions exactly. :)

And if you look in most threads the same questions have already been asked and answered.

You have to extract the .img file FROM the RAR archive. You probably tried to flash the RAR directly which borked your system.

ok, I'm reading over everything right now, lol. Thanks So Much to all of you!

Am I supposed to extract the flash_image.zip.?

Yes. Please take my suggestion and read up a little on the pages I've linked before starting. Especially coming from a previous bjork...

oh yeah, definitely reading up first cause sprint just replaced this phone a week ago and its not going to be good if I go back in there with the same issue again lol. So from what I understood from the recovery instructions, I extract both the flash_image.zip and the recovery rar and put them on root of sd card. Then put in the commands and that I'll be good to go. That sounds right to all of you? Lol

Sounds like you got it. Then flash a rom following the rom instructions and then anything else just the same... Make sure you are rooted before trying to load the recovery...

Yeah i'm rooted with gingerbreak. Also, after i do the custom recovery, I don't need to immediately do a ROM flash do i? Like i can do the recovery and then boot into the stock ROM right?

That is correct, you don't have to flash a custom rom if you don't want to.

thanks... Do i have to have the zip, rar, and the extracts all on the root of the sd? Also i got an error while extracting the RAR? Tried 2 more times and still got an exception error. Makes me worry about doing it. Also, do i have to be connected to a computer or is that just if i use the adb shell? I like to use the terminal emulator and i'm downloading the files from the phone. Thanks
