I'm new to Android, So what does an encrypted bootloader do or not do? And wouldn't that be known by now if so many people have had their hands on wouldn't hat be one of the first things some people would check out?

Not everyones had the ability to hook it up to their computers.

If the bootloader is locked, only software from Motorola signed with official encryption keys can be flashed to the phone. The Milestone is like this

The reason nobody knows if it's locked:

Motorola has already said that the Droid being unlocked was a mistake, and all future phones would have locked bootloaders. The actually said they would prefer losing customers to the Nexus One vs. selling unlocked development phones. This is a good business decision, even though it's an unpopular one.

To see if the bootloader is locked, the phone has to be rooted. None of the people able to attempt rooting a Verizon/Motorola device have one yet.

In that case I'm definitely sticking with my Droid. If I can't have root then I'll wait for a 2GHz phone. No point in switching to a phone that can't run as fast as my current one.

No no no! You got it all wrong. :P

A DX running at 1ghz will crap on a Droid at 1.25ghz. The processor is much faster and more capable... it's not the same chip. Clock speed is not everything!

I know for a fact, that 2Ghz doesn't mean anything without the right programming, and really a 2Ghz phone would be pointless, if you want a media phone go for the X, if your not as media bound, then stick with your Droid1 until a good phone not meant for all this Media and mobile gaming stuff.

locked bootloader doesn't mean it's unable to be rooted, just that custom roms and boot/radio images can't be flashed. Still a bunch of unknowns here.

Well a locked/encrypted boot loader does not mean a root method is impossible. Root and custom rims are two different things and I am sure someone will get a root method working on the droid X

Thanks for the info. I'm more interested in the 2GHz Droid so I'll probably hold off for that.

Well I am new to Android, (don't have a device yet) & the Verizon Rep was like literally begging me to get a Droid X, so I guess I'll get that one. Do you think that not being able to root is a problem? I mean it sounds cool, but I wouldn't root my phone until it's the end of the contract so if it breaks, I'll be okay hah.

So, is there a rumor/expectation or speculation going around that there actually is, or will be an encrypted bootloader on the DX? I'm new to Android, so I don't know if this has been a problem on other phones, or what might be the basis for the question.

i would be fine with this, as the stock loader actually looks quite awesome. my main reason for rooting would be to OC the processor, but once it gets 2.2, that will likely be a moot point anyway

I think the explanation in post #23 is what everyone's basing it on at the moment.

Forgive my ignorance, but I have a POS Storm 1 (read as I'm in the dark ages with smart phones) and am planning on moving over to the X next week. Is there a Rooting 101 page somewhere that someone could point me to? I would love to know the basics on what rooting is and why it is so advantageous...

Thanks in advance.

Cory, thanks for smerging these similar posts together... More feedback for the poll. Im curious to hear from those who said an encrypted bootloader would be a deal breaker. Is it that there are specific things you would need to address with a custom rom? Or is it just that it would irk you that you can't put a custom deal on? I only ask because if this is encrypted chances are the 2.0ghz wunderphone will be encrypted too so those waiting for that because of an encrypted bootloader on the dx will have the same problem.

I think the bootloader being encrypted really only becomes a big deal if Moto is slow with updates to new verisions of android. Or when the phone nears the end of the support line, which sadly none of us know when that will be, in order to keep making upgrades. With as fast as the wireless market is moving no one really knows how long a device will be supported. And then there is the question of how long should a device be supported?

Droid X Bootloader Locked

I don't know about anyone else but this is a huge buzzkill for me. As soon as I read that I was thinking "Well on to the Droid 2".

I don't know who decides to lock it down though it is most likely Motorola or MAYBE Verizon but they definitely messed up on this one.

I feel the reason the Droid was so popular was because of the ability to load/do what you wanted with it.

Either way this dismisses the Droid X... How do you feel about this?

Sorry to say man, theres already a thread about this, your about to get moved I think.

Well...it says locked, but not necessarily encrypted (which I understand is quite different). However, even assuming they meant encrypted...It seems root should still be possible which means we would only be losing custom roms, and I think I could live with that (at least for the next 6 months since I probably upgrade that quickly anyway haha)
