Would you adopt-a-newb? I'm coming from webOS.

Ben, thanks for the concise tutorial. I just got the Evo 3D two weeks ago and even though I am not ready to root, and I found your information quite insightful. Thanks dude... Cheers

There should be a "Thank All" button. The idea of adopting a newbie is great and just by reading all of these posts I have learned a lot. Congrats on your new toy OP, you are going to love it! Oh, and if someone already mentioned it please forgive me, but the new MHL feature is fantastic. You do have to purchase the adapter separately and cost varies depending on where you can find it. Anyway, it allows full mirroring of your phone to your TV. This means you can view picture slide shows, watch home movies, stream YouTube videos, and play games all on the big screen. Another way to display media on your TV is to use Media Share, which comes preinstalled. We use it through wifi on our PS3.

Again, welcome! :)

Carrie

Thanks for the welcome, Carrie. I am sure to love the EVO 3D. I am ready for a new phone. I just looked up MHL and it sounds pretty sweet. I had never heard of it before.

Activedodger, my pleasure! I remember when I switched from Blackberry to Android a good while back, I had lots of questions about lots of stuff, and I couldn't find a "noob's guide to Android" anywhere. I've been thinking about writing up a proper multi-part guide to all things Android (except development. I don't develop.) and this thread just kinda kick-started it for me. Maybe tonight I'll write up a post on ADB and some of the more common problems, issues, and uses for it.

Any other topics I need to cover? Post your questions so we can answer them!

Have you checked out the *Getting Started* button at the top left of each page of Android Central ? It has a wealth of info-tips and tricks. :D

Right, so the getting started guide is great for newbies getting familiar with Android. Maybe I'll do some write-ups on a Beginner's Guide to Modding. Mostly just defining terms, describing a few general procedures, and helping with the basics. I'm sure there are guides out there, but it might help a few folks if they're all in one place. Either way, it'd be fun to do. :)

How's the new toy ? :D

Freakin' awesome! Whee!!

It's so fast. I am just blown away. And it actually stays turned on overnight, which is kinda important because I'm on-call this week. :D I put LastPass and Xmarks on it, I'm golden! Now I just need a good Google Reader app, Simplenote app, and Toodledo app. Then, the biggie: WiFi tethering.

So far so good. I still do a lot of swiping, it's a hard habit to break.

Great to hear !! Fast and functional, what a concept. There's a Reader in your app list, in HTC Hub in the app list there is a Notes widget. HTC Hub>Widgets>Notes. I use Notes by Yuli, from the market it's pretty cool. The swiping will go away in a week or so. Enjoy !!:D

I don't know if you know about EasyTether or not, but it allows you to get web access on your pc or laptop. It is very easy to use, and has a one time cost of $9.99. You do not have to be rooted to use it and it will tide you over until you decide to root. I have actually been able at times to get better performance by using EasyTether than wifi tether.

Congratulations on your new toy!

First, congrats on your new kickin' phone!

I don't see it mentioned here. If you sign up on Amazon, they offer a free 'paid' app every day. You just download the amazon appstore app, log in, and voila. A new free 'paid' app offered daily. A lot of games but I've gotten some really sweet paid apps for free such as Tweetcaster Pro, Angry Birds, Plants vs Zombies, etc.

Indeed, what a concept. :) Oh, I thought that reader was an ebook reader. I'll look at it again. Well, I assume that Notes Widget is for creating and storing notes just on the EVO, right? I need an app that interfaces with Simplenote. I am sure I can find one.

I hope the swiping goes away soon. I keep doing things that I don't want to do.

Thanks, but I must have a WiFi tethering app. EasyTether is USB only. Darn it.

Thanks! It is a superb phone.

I did not know about the Amazon store. I will look into that for sure. Thanks for letting me know.

Yeah, that's what Google Reader is. It's awesome and if you are not using it, you have no idea what you're missing out on.

Thanks for the tip. How are you finding time for your new toy with the How Do I.............. thingy over there ? lol lol

I found an App search engine this morning that looks interesting. It's called Mobilewalla. It's in the Market & has a website. Happy 3D-ing. :D

Wiley, I am so sorry I did not reply to this post of yours. I sort of fell off the Internet for a while, especially forums (webOS and Android included). Things are going pretty good with the new EVO 3D toy. I still haven't rooted or anything like that, but I plan on doing so very soon. The HP DeadPad is also taking my time, of course. I use it every day and still enjoy it. Thanks for the MobileWalla link, looks promising.

Does signing into the Amazon App get you the free App and how does it let you know or do you have to get that other app that says get free Amazon app?

Amazon Daily Free App (Free)

Yes, once you get the Amazon Appstore app onto your phone you'll have access to the daily freebie app. The Appstore app will not notify you of the new freebies, you'll have to launch the app every day and have it refresh its list to see the new app.
