Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?

Can't you download the play store on the Kindle fire hd and just get all the Android apps from there?

To DirkBelig, I have no idea what the experience is like, I don't have Amazon Prime (but I've been thinking about getting it for a while now). I have been contemplating it, but may wait until it has better support on my tablet.

As for the Play Store on the Fire, if the new ones are like the previous model in this regard, then no. Play Store would open up the Fire to other distributor's content, and Amazon doesn't want that, they want you to purchase from them only. To get Play Store support, you'd have to root and ROM the Fire, then edit a file to get the Play Store to recognize it (that part's not so bad, it's one line in one file, I did it with both my Nook Color and my Nook Tablet). The problem is getting it rooted may take a while because of Amazon's forked version of Android is going to be pretty different from just about anything else out there.

TL;DR. If Play Store access is what you want, there are much better choices out there for that than the Kindle Fire series.

I'd rather not have ads forced on me. In an app is one thing, on the device itself, no thanks.

The missing piece is pricing.
If Microsoft gives these away like Google and Amazon are doing with their hardware, I fully expect Microsoft to own this market.
I don't think they will--Google increases profits with Play, and Amazon with any of their services, but I don't think Windows has that same motive to reduce costs.

if the price is anything under $400, I'm going to make my laptop extinct lol. I don't game, and the only crucial software I have on the laptop is Photoshop, which I won't use when I'm not at home.

The 8.9 intrigues me when someone roots it and has a nice stable version of ICS or Jellybean. Until then I'm happy with my Nexus 7.

I had the kindle fire and that carousel is the worst. I would not buy another kindle if the home screen looks like that. Also, the browser was not great.

Based on these two issues, I will not buy a kindle tablet although I am heavily invested in the amazon ecosystem.

Windows 8 features an "app store", so Microsoft may be compelled to make some similar moves toward building ecosystem/market share. I still don't expect the Windows tablets to be quite cost competitive, though, and I'm not sure I'd want one with RT anyway. Time will tell...

Scope browser plays Amazon instant video in perfect quality on the N7.
No hits in Play store. Does it cost? Even with free credit, the idea of buying an app for one web site because that site refuses to support what they view as competition is a non-starter.

I get that A'zon wants people to buy Kindles, but with 1.3 million Android devices being activated every day - 70,000 tablets - they are punishing their customers who are paying for Prime for not buying their store dongle device.

EDIT: I see it's called xScope. $2.99. FTS.

Newer does not always mean better! The N7 still has a better CPU and GPU and it runs JellyBean. Google Rocks now and it will Rock in the future, Nuff said.

I passed on the kindle fire to begin with just because I did not want to be locked into the Amazon ecosystem. I can get the vast majority of Amazon services on my N7, plus I have the added benefit of Google apps and the ability to easily root my device. Those things, for me personally, far outweigh anything Amazon can do for me on their devices.

I was excited to hear the news that Fire HD 7in had 4g until I went to amazon and found out it was the 8.9 in version, not 7in. I like the 7in and if I wanted a 9/10in tablet I would get an ipad. I think after getting over the buzz and reading up, I'm happy and will keep my nexus 7.

I don't think they 'refuse to support competition', it's Chrome's fault for not enabling flash. xScope supports HD flash.

Aside from pissy sites like Hulu, you can stream HD videos from anywhere. Mozilla supports flash but it's TERRIBLE quality. So with the free credit, xScope is a worthwhile purchase.

If a 2.99 (free with included credit) app gives the N7 the function that is the deciding factor on which device you buy, buying it is a no brainer. It actually used to be free a month ago, but when the folks at xscope realised they were the only option for proper Flash on the N7, they made it 2.99.

I recall reading somewhere that Google was not concerned about Apple which everyone would assume that they should be but to be concerned about Amazon.

It looks like the prediction might have been spot on. Amazon has the all the right stuff in place to do that.

Just to clarify, Amazon isn't the only website that uses Flash. I know of at least one or two more.

I just think the nexus 7 and the Kindle fire aim to two different markets. Personally, i think the people who already have a Kindle fire are mostly going to be the ones buying these updated versions.
