Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?

IMO it's the razor & razor blades. Both Google & Amazon want you to be captured customers AFTER you buy their tablet.

The Kindle not having GPS is a show stopper for me. If you travel, GPS with Tripadvisor is such a huge benefit.

The tablet market today reminds me of the PC market of 20 years ago where there were significant improvements every 6 to 9 months. Exciting times.

I love the pricing pressure. But for me I just cant stand the completely custom OS build. It is built off of ICS but who cares you wouldnt ever know it. I like my N7 which is a true tablet that allows me to purchase what I want where I want.

Actually, it's built off Gingerbread.

I don't think they 'refuse to support competition', it's Chrome's fault for not enabling flash. xScope supports HD flash.
What I meant is that the only reason A'zon hasn't put out an Amazon Instant Video app for non-Fire Android devices is because they want people to buy Fires. There is no technical limitation and they just rolled out an iPad app, so this is strictly trying to force Fires on people at the expense of leaving Prime users SOL if they don't buy in.

It's not that huge a deal because I can watch through my consoles on the big HDTVs; it's more a principle of the issue matter.

If tablet specs continue to improve, I can see the larger ones almost eliminating the need for laptops in the near future. Laptops will become the new PC, at least for younger people who don't need a desktop PC to do their work at home. Or at the very least, they'll help drive down the cost of basic laptops.

I'd love to see a tablet with multiple USB ports, maybe an HDMI port, SD port, etc. though, it would make the device a lot thicker..

I think the Nexus 7 is way better then the new Kindle Fire's. The Skin is really ugly looking and all of them are ad based. Why would a buy something where ads pop up all the time on my lockscreen.

Got a link? Last spec sheet I saw either from the Verge or here listed ICS as the base for the new Fire HDs.

..this is what Microsoft is striving for with Windows 8.

This cover flow interface is ninth circle of hell! I've had enough of this crap// A Satan of all android UIs!

Thread title should probably get fixed. :)

Dolphin browser no longer supports Flash on Jellybean, but any of Firefox, Boat or xScope should work. Not as good as a native app of course.

If Amazon releases an app for the Nexus I'll likely subscribe to Prime...but we'll see.

ICS with ads on the lock screen. I will stick with the nexus 7. Pure jellybean and what I'm sure will be fast update to klp. The kindle looms nice but Im done buying devices with the hope of ROMs. There no promise that cm will work much less have all the functions.

Ads sank the Fire HD ship before it even set sail. N7 will get multiple profile capability and it's inevitable that Amazon Streaming will come to the Play Store.

Plenty of people will buy the Fire HD, don't get me wrong. The competition within the Android market is great. But massive sales of a cheap inferior product =/= best in a toe-to-toe comparison. It will be up to Google to get more ads out on TV for the N7, slash prices, offer more features, a 3g/4g version, higher capacity ROM, and always stay ahead of the curve with the Nexus line- even if it means never being the breakaway sales leader by leaps and bounds.

Having one company or product line completely demolish everything else in it's industry is never a good thing. [See: late 80's Apple ad that ironically has come full circle]

As with most things, this competition comes down to money.

Amazon's new device is great, but in the end it exists solely to weld you into their ecosystem and their content, thus they have a customized version of ICS to prevent access to anybody but them. Don't get me wrong, love Amazon and am highly invested in content from them, just don't want to be utterly dependent on them to decide what I can and cannot do with my purchase. And lack of GPS is a killer for me. Yes, they lost money on each machine (likely) but force you to guarantee that they'll make it back by binding you inexorably to them for everything that makes the device useful. Of course, unlike Google, Amazon HAS to make money on their content, it's their main business model. Google doesn't, their revenue comes in largely through ad and marketing service. Apple of course sticks it to you both ways, overprices their hardware (though it is VERY good) and requires you to get whatever is on it from them.

Do any of you think there'd even be a Kindle Fire HD or a soon-to-be-announced iPad mini if wasn't for the jab in the ribs from the Nexus 7?

You can get your content for apple devices from anywhere.
