Wow. How's Google going to beat new HD Kindle Fire at $159?

heavily skinned os, little to no updates, no play store.....

No thanks, I'll pay slightly more for something that is android, not just built on top of it and stripped of the goods.

It really depends how invested you are in the Amazon ecosystem.

Yup. Very narrow profit margin.

These Kindle Fire HDs are probably being sold at a loss.

Except they have ads on lockscreens and only real purpose is to be a service linking Amazon content.

I know the Nexus was portrayed as that, but for Kindles it's much more so.

Oh sorry. I was referring to simply hardware costs.

I'm not a penny, with that being said..if I had books or music bought from Amazon, I could easily still read/listen to it on any device I had.

Now turn the tables and say you are invested into Google play, much harder to get your material on kindle.

Yup. Other than video, I see no reason in a device focused solely on Amazon content distribution.

The only reason I the kindle will do better than the n7 is its a house hold name.

The new kindle doesn't even have gps....no thanks

Of the nexus 7? The hardware is over $180. They have zero space to reduce the price at all.

Well the problem is that its being produced by Asus - I don't know who's manufacturing the Kindle or if Amazon is completely controlling that supply chain. If its the latter, as I think, then it takes a large profit-requiring cog out of the chain, so its simply a lot easier to set up a product like the Fire where you can afford to lose money out of the box and make it up on content.

For Google to do that, with Asus as third-party manufacturer, is just simply a more complicated process.

Amazon uses an OEM for their designs. (pegatron i think) The last Fire was a refeence design that was used as the basis for the Playbook.

That's a great point. I've never used KF extensively so i wouldn't know but does it have the ability to install:
- Google GPS/Navi
- Google talk (or at least some sort of a video chat app)... although Google talk is used by almost everyone with Google accounts.
- Gmail (or at least a mail app)? It must
- A banking app
- A cloud storage app
- Cloud based contacts app (linked to popular email services)

If not, then this device is extremely limited and I'll be shocked to see it take a serious market share. It wouldn't be a smart investment.
Someone please shed some light on this.
Thanks

Edit: i see they offer Amazon cloud storage

Officially- rule out any Google Apps.

You can browse the Amazon App Market on the desktop to see about the other apps.

Via http://money.cnn.com/2012/09/06/technology/kindle-fire-sales/

IHS iSuppli's analysis of tablet market share also calls into question a dubious stat Amazon released last week. Amazon said the Kindle Fire holds a 22% market share in its nine months on the market -- but IHS iSuppli found that the Kindle Fire never held more than a 14% share, and sales have slipped significantly in recent months.

Still, over 10% market share would be significant but Amazon is probably using some fuzzy math.

Google needs to really step up its game in its ecosystem to compete. They also need to market and advertise the Nexus 7 more. Showcase it more to the masses.

The only good thing I hope comes from the new kindle fires would be for developers to develop more tablet apps. All android tablets lack tablet apps. Google needs to find a way to get developers to produce these apps. Without it, I believe android tablets won't succeed. Especially with Windows 8 tablets coming.

It really is about marketing.

Then the apps.

Depending on price, I can envision Windows 8 tablets killing off any momentum Android tablets can muster up in the next two months.

I don't know about that. The Surface series is nice, but let's face it--it's a different class of tablet.

I can see Windows tablets being very popular among government employees and businesses dependent on Microsoft products.
Other than that, we'll just have to wait and see

I'm really impressed with the Kindle Fire HD hardware. Had to dig a bit to find information on the TI OMAP 4470, the Archos 101 XS is the only tablet using it right now I think and it's benchmarks were surprisingly competitive with the Tegra 3, though I'd like to see Anandtech's review of it. But for the moment the dual core TI OMAP 4470 doesn't look like a negative.

A positive about the TI OMAP is that it's seems to produce better colors more accurately. From what I've been reading on Nexus 7, ASUS TF200 and TF300, and other Tegra 3 device forums is some of these color and screen issues we are seeing is a result of the Tegra 3. And so not surprising that people that did the hands on with the Kindle Fire HD remarked the colors look more saturated and better. Sorry, Nexus 7 just looks a bit washed out for my taste (though I can easily live with it).

I love that Amazon has support for the 5GHz 802.11n band. My Galaxy Nexus phone has 5Hz wifi, my iPad has it, but not my Nexus 7.

Pricing is better since you get a 16GB for $200 and a 32GB for $250.

Unfortunately the downside is the software. I'm a pretty hardcore Amazon eco person. I have a Prime membership, I have bought all my ebooks from Amazon, all my music from Amazon, I canceled my Netflix and just use Amazon Instant Video now. And I'd love to have an Amazon Instant Video app on my Nexus 7 (I have it on my iPad though). However there is no way I'd want to be locked into ONLY Amazon's content. And that is the reason I probably won't buy one. Also being stuck on Amazon's version of Android 4.0.3 would stink, I love Jelly Bean.

So, I think Amazon wins pretty easily with the hardware (and it looks like it's glass isn't popping out of the bezel, haha), but for me the Nexus 7 wins big on software and the software is really more important than the hardware.

The missing piece is pricing.

If Microsoft gives these away like Google and Amazon are doing with their hardware, I fully expect Microsoft to own this market.

...according to amazon. The companies that actually track usage and sales put amazon far behind even Samsung. There were stories all over the web about amazons sales collapsing post iPad 3 and never recovering.
After Nexus 7 it collapsed even further.
